Welcome back! We are excited to see all of our students return following the winter break. We hope that the time away provided a chance for everyone to rest and recharge with family.
As we return, we quickly approach the halfway point in the school year. Our 90th day is on January 23! This is a great time to check in with your children to see if they need to replenish any school supplies (pencils, coloring utensils, notebooks, or even headphones).
As we transition into second semester, WIN groups will be adjusted based on the iReady diagnostic that students will begin completing right after break. Students will receive new schedules prior to the start of the semester. The parent portal will close to viewing on January 16 in preparation for report cards. It will reopen on January 28, at which point Semester 1 Report Cards will be available.
If you have any concerns, please feel free to contact us.
Thank you,
Josh Belvis
Principal

School Committee Meeting - January 14
From The Assistant Principal- Mrs. Pietrasik
Welcome back! I hope you all had a relaxing holiday. Thank you to everyone who supported our winter concert. Our students did a phenomenal job and showed off their incredible talent.
A massive thank you to Mrs. Mulcahy and Mrs. Alosa for their dedication in putting together such a wonderful celebration of music.
As we transition into the colder months, we want to ensure our learning environment remains focused and respectful. Please be reminded that phones, gum, and hoods are not permitted at HMS. To maintain consistency, students who require multiple reminders regarding these expectations will receive a formal consequence.
We have recently seen an increase in inappropriate phone and group chat usage, including attempts to contact teachers on their personal cell phones. We ask for your partnership in speaking with your child about digital boundaries; reaching out to staff members on their personal devices is strictly prohibited and highly inappropriate.
From Guidance – Ms. Hobin
Grade 8 Parents:
- We are about to jump into the high school scheduling process! In January, teachers will recommend levels for major academic classes followed by students choosing their electives. On Thursday, February 12th, from 6:30-8:00 PM, WHRHS counselors and administrators will host a scheduling and curriculum night. This will be held in the auditorium at W-H Regional High School and will be an opportunity for parents of current 8th graders to learn more about courses offered at the high school and the process of scheduling courses. At the beginning of March, high school counselors and students will meet with our 8th graders to talk more about scheduling and the high school experience. If you wish to speak with someone in the high school Guidance department, please contact Courtney Selig at Courtney.Selig@whrsd.org or 781-618-7020 x7455. I can also be reached at Jan.Hobin@whrsd.org or 781-618-7575.
- W-H Regional High School also recently hosted an Open House for current Grade 8 students and parents. Links to information shared that evening are below:
- A reminder that applications to South Shore Tech are due by January 16th.
- Some of our 8th graders are 14 now and are beginning to express an interest in applying for jobs. Please see the link below for the "Employment Permit Application" as well as "Laws Regulating Minors' Work Hours and Occupation Restrictions".

Please feel free to ask as many questions as you have... I know this is a lot to navigate and I'm glad to help in any way that I can!
Poverty Awareness Month - Ms. Dempsey
January is Poverty Awareness Month. Most recently, the U.S. Census Bureau reported that there were 35.9 million people living in poverty in the United States. This includes about 10.4 million children. In addition, the USDA’s most recent (2023) report shows that as many as 47.4 million people in the U.S. reported food-insecurity (a number predicted to have risen significantly since then). As we reach the end of the holiday season, it is important to consider the additional strain that the holidays can have on low-income families. Due to the societal expectations of extensive gift-giving, large celebratory meals, and decorations, it can often force families to choose between basic necessities and getting to participate in festive traditions. This January, keep in mind the many families who will be struggling post-holidays, and consider extending the season-of-giving to donate to some worthy causes.

School Nurse News
HAPPY NEW YEAR AND WELCOME BACK FROM THE HOLIDAY BREAK!
ABSENCES AND ILLNESSES:
- Please remember to call the absence sick line (781-618-7375) or the nurse directly to report your student absent and be sure to include the reason for absence. I usually will follow up with a phone call or email home as needed if a student is out for more than 3 - 4 days and we have not received any calls for the absences.
- With the Flu/COVID and cold season upon us, please continue to be cautious and keep sick children home until their symptoms have improved. If your child has a fever of 100 or higher, they need to stay home until they are fever free for 24 hours without taking any fever reducing medicine. If your child has a Gastrointestinal Illness (vomiting and/or diarrhea) - they should stay home until 24 hours after vomiting and/or diarrhea has resolved, they are showing improvement, and they feel well enough to participate in school.
MANDATED SCREENINGS:
- Grade 7 screenings are complete. If you received a referral letter for your child regarding follow up on the vision or hearing screening, please remember to send the doctor’s letter back to me once your child has the follow up appointment for this. Thank you.
- Scoliosis screenings will be conducted for all grades 5-9 in the spring. A notification letter will be sent out prior to the screenings.
INJURIES/RESTRICTIONS:
- If your child has sustained an injury, we must have a note from the doctor stating the child’s physical limitations/restrictions, including a gym excuse note and order for the use of assistive devices such as crutches or a wheelchair
Thank you and as always please contact me with any questions or concerns,

Best Buddies
A Great Start to Best Buddies!
We are excited to share that our first Best Buddies meeting of the year was a great success! Students came together with enthusiasm, kindness, and open minds to begin building new friendships. Everyone enjoyed getting to know one another through fun activities and conversations, setting a positive tone for the year ahead.
The meeting highlighted what Best Buddies is all about—inclusion, friendship, and support. It was wonderful to see students connecting, laughing, and making each other feel welcome. We are proud of the strong start and look forward to many more meaningful meetings and memories throughout the year.
Greater Good Club
The Greater Good Club and My Brother's Keeper would like to extend a most sincere heartfelt thank you to all of the families that donated gifts for families in need this holiday season! The Greater Good Club and My Brother's Keeper joined forces this holiday season to bring joy to many families in need. We displayed a holiday tree, Angel Tree, in the foyer of our school and placed 100 gift tag ornaments with suggestions and ideas for children of all ages. On Tuesday, December 9th, My Brother's Keeper came to HMS to collect donations from our Angel Tree. We had placed 100 gift tags on our Angel Tree and 91 were taken and returned!!! Each student/staff member that took a tag, returned to HMS with not just one idea or suggestive gift...but MANY gifts! We were deeply moved by the level of generosity in our community. We are extremely grateful to all who participated in any way.
