From the Senior Leadership Team – Term 1, Week 3

Kia ora koutou,

It is hard to believe we are already heading into the midpoint of February! The energy across the school grounds has been fantastic, and as the Senior Leadership Team, we’ve spent a lot of time visiting classrooms and observing the start of our 2026 journey.

A Settled Start

The most pleasing aspect of the last two weeks has been seeing how quickly our learners have settled into their new environments. There is a real sense of positivity throughout the school; classrooms buzzing with collaboration, and the playground is full of students reconnecting and making new friends. It’s wonderful to see our learners truly enjoying their time at school and becoming familiar with new routines.

Opportunities and Finding Balance

Our extracurricular groups, sports teams, and cultural groups for 2026 are filling up fast! We love the enthusiasm our students show for trying new things, but we do ask for your support in guiding them toward a balanced schedule.

  • Quality over Quantity: Please help your child avoid over-committing. It is vital they still have downtime to simply "be" with their friends and recharge.

  • Commitment: We want to foster a sense of responsibility. If a learner signs up for a group, we expect them to commit fully and give their best effort. Showing up for their teammates and tutors is a key part of our school values.

The Importance of Attendance

Attendance is a major focus for us this year, aligned with the Ministry of Education’s initiative to ensure all learners are in school and engaged. Every day counts toward your child’s academic progress and social belonging. On our website, you will notice the Star Attendance Flowchat. This is a quick reference to help you understand what happens if there is a problem with your child’s attendance.

Please remember that if your child is unable to attend school, you must contact the school office every day that they are away. This ensures we know all our students are safe and accounted for.

Addressing Lateness

While most students are arriving ready to go, we have noticed that lateness has already started to "creep up" for some. Arriving late can be disruptive, not just for the class but for the learner who misses those crucial first instructions and the morning "settle-in" time. Some learners can feel worried about arriving late and having to walk into their classroom after the bell.

We want to catch these patterns early. If your child is struggling to get to school on time, please reach out to their classroom teacher or a member of the Senior Leadership Team. We would much rather work together now to find a solution and correct the habit before it becomes a long-term challenge.

Thank you for your ongoing support in making Takapuna Normal Intermediate a vibrant place to learn.
