A Note from Mrs. Mathe

What an exciting week it’s been at Hines! Our campus has been buzzing with energy, learning, and Husky pride as we wrapped up October with some memorable celebrations and activities.

We kicked off the week with Red Ribbon Week, where students showed their commitment to making healthy, safe choices through fun dress-up days. From PJ day to favorite team spirit wear, our hallways were filled with color, creativity, and positive messages about being healthy and making good choices.

On Thursday, we welcomed a very special guest — Orbit from the Houston Astros! ⚾💚 Orbit’s “Strike Out Bullying” program had our students laughing, cheering, and learning the importance of kindness, respect, and standing up for others. It was a great reminder that being a good teammate matters both on and off the field!

Our kindergarteners also had a blast with their pumpkin investigations, exploring the sights, smells, weights, and measurements of pumpkins through fun, hands-on learning experiences.

Friday was one for the books with our Storybook Character Parade! Students and staff brought their favorite book characters to life, celebrating the joy of reading and creativity. Our Huskies loved showing off their costumes and waving to their cheering families. It’s been a week full of learning, laughter, and community — a perfect way to close out October at Hines!

Orbit Visit

We had a special visitor Thursday — Orbit from the Houston Astros! He joined us for an exciting and interactive program all about kindness, respect, and standing up against bullying.

Our Huskies learned that being a good teammate doesn’t just happen on the field — it happens every day at school when we include others, use kind words, and stand up for what’s right.

A huge thank you to the Houston Astros organization and Orbit for spreading such a positive message and so much fun throughout our campus!

Class pictures and Retake Picture Day is coming up on:

Friday, Nov 7

Class Pictures: All classes will take a group picture. Ordering information was sent home in Friday folders.

Fall Picture Retakes:

  • If you're satisfied with your child's picture, no further action is required.
  • If you purchased and were unhappy with your Picture Package, please send your Picture Package to school with your student on Retake Day. Your Retake Picture Package will be produced and shipped to the school four weeks after Retake Day. Please note, if your child is photographed on the original and Retake Picture Days, the Retake picture will replace the original picture in certain products, like the yearbook.
  • Students who were absent for Picture Day should come to school prepared to have their picture taken. If you have not preordered, please use the Retake Order Code 0074CCF to place your order at https://inter-state.com/Order. To see your Order History, check your Inter-State Account.

Find answers to Retake Day questions here.

GT Testing Information

Referral requests for the Gifted and Talented (GT) program are now being accepted from October 1–December 19, 2024. Although GT testing will not take place until late January, families interested in referring their child should contact their child’s teacher to request a nomination packet.

Please note: 2nd grade students do not need a parent referral. All 2nd graders will take the CogAT test this October. These scores are used as the first step in the GT evaluation process. Families will be notified after CogAT results are received if their child qualifies for the second phase of GT testing in January.
