On Monday, October 5, we will have our first 'late start' of the year. This happens approximately 2 times per month (in alignment with the UFT Contract). The building opens 30 minutes prior to the first class, so we will begin Morning Entry at 9:05 AM.

School Locks Update School Locks Update

We understand there has been some concern about school-issued locks on social media. Additionally, there has been some confusion about the reason behind it. Parents and students have already purchased locks for the school year. Principal Marwah has reviewed the rollout of the lock policy and has made changes to it: school-issued locks will not be required. Students can keep their current lock or pick up a free one in Room 317.

Some attributed LaGuardia's plan to switch to school-issued locks to a variety of nefarious reasons, but it was more simple than that:

  • Unused supply. The school bought locks in 2022-23 that were never used, and we wanted to put them to use.
  • Cost. Every student needs a lock, and we didn't want you to have to pay for one.
  • Forgotten combinations. When we have to clip a lock, the student has to buy a new one. With school-issued locks, we'd have your combination on file.
  • Locker mix-ups. We get regular reports of someone else putting a lock on a student's assigned locker. School-issued locks would make these easier to track and resolve.
  • Sustainability. A lock's environmental cost is almost entirely in mining and smelting its zinc and steel, and it's built to last decades. Using the ones we already own, and keeping combinations on file so fewer locks get clipped and thrown away, means fewer new locks made and fewer old ones in the trash.

Early Dismissal is for emergencies only!

The consensus is: children need to be in school. There are extreme situations -- emergencies, really -- where a child cannot finish their day and needs to leave before the end of school. LaGuardia has procedures for Early Dismissal just for these situations.

Early Dismissal should be requested sparingly by a parent, and we ask everyone to support our message that school is important. Arts and academics are important; socialization and soft skills are important; and being in school is important.

Know your students 9-digit OSIS/Student ID Number

When corresponding with the Attendance Team, please be sure that all emails, notes, messages, etc. include your child's 9-digit Student ID number. This greatly helps us process requests and locate student records more quickly.

Clubs Begin Week of September 28

Our student club program begins the week of September 28, 2026, after a very successful Club Fair. To learn more about a club, students just need to attend the meetings -- no pre-registration is required. They can find out the clubs are being offered and the day of the week the club meets by reviewing the Club List 26-27 using their nycstudents.net account or visit the Clubs & Activities page on the school's website.

As a reminder: Yondr Pouches should be unlocked immediately after school before attending any after school activities.

Sepsis Awareness Month Sepsis Awareness Month

Each September, schools and communities across New York State recognize Sepsis Awareness Month, an opportunity to increase awareness of sepsis, promote early recognition of its warning signs, and reinforce the important role schools play in supporting student health and safety.

Sepsis is the body's extreme response to an infection and is a life-threatening medical emergency that requires prompt recognition and treatment. While sepsis can affect individuals of any age, children are particularly vulnerable because the early signs and symptoms may resemble common illnesses. Increased awareness among students, families, educators, and school personnel can contribute to earlier recognition and timely medical care, improving health outcomes.

The impetus behind this important education campaign was the death of 12-year-old Rory Staunton, a resident of Queens, New York, who succumbed to sepsis less than a week after suffering a minor cut in school. We are stressing the importance of understanding what sepsis is, its signs and symptoms and when and where to seek medical care for such infections. For more information, please view NYSED Sepsis Webpage.
