Interactive Read-Alouds: From Inspiration to Implementation

Maria Walther’s session on high-impact interactive read-alouds (IRAs) has sparked a statewide wave of intentionality. Coaches and teachers are digging deeper into planning read-alouds that aren’t just routine, but rich, responsive, and rigorous.

At CSRA RESA, PLCs are using Maria’s framework to design read-alouds that elevate student voice and connect literacy to real-world thinking.

In Chattahoochee-Flint RESA, coaches are modeling these practices live in professional learning, guiding teachers to use thoughtful questioning, build vocabulary, and prompt student reflection in real time.

Metro RESA emphasized that IRAs should go beyond decoding; they’re opportunities for students to hear expressive language, develop fluency, and make meaningful text-to-self and text-to-world connections. Across districts, the shift is clear: educators are embracing the power of read-alouds not only to teach, but to transform.

Let's READ, Georgia!

LitLoveRead Month: Celebrating Connection & Curiosity

LitLoveRead was more than a campaign, it was a movement. Districts brought the love of reading to life through school-wide events, interactive activities, and community engagement.

First District RESA’s Literacy Coaches brought smiles and stories to life as they delivered literacy “goodie bags” to school-based coaches and joined students for read-aloud fun. The classrooms were filled with laughter, learning, and the joy of shared reading, proving once again that literacy is a gift worth sharing!

Griffin RESA launched their celebration with a virtual kickoff for Literacy Leads, complete with ready-made tools like the Picture Book Scavenger Hunt, Read-Aloud Questions, and Family Bingo Cards.

Oconee RESA teachers used engagement strategies to make read-alouds unforgettable moments for students. Meanwhile, Northeast GA RESA held micro-Zooms where coaches led critical conversations about student learning and engagement.

From coast to mountains and back again, LitLoveRead sparked joy, fueled curiosity, and left waves of change. Students are reading with excitement. Teachers want more. The ripple is real.

Impact of Interactive Read-Alouds

The impact was immediate and heartfelt. Coaches reported teachers rethinking their read-alouds with more purpose. Students requested rereads, engaged in deep discussions, and even asked to lead read-alouds themselves.

At Northwest GA RESA, coaches used video vignettes and newsletters to reinforce implementation. In North GA RESA, teachers wanted to share video models with their entire staff. Griffin RESA parents reached out to thank teams for the take-home resources.

One standout example came from CSRA RESA: teachers not only enjoyed planning their read-alouds but noticed immediate gains in oral language and engagement. With support systems in place like coaching cycles, collaborative planning, and data tools, Georgia educators are building a culture where feedback fuels forward motion.

Manipulatives & AI

Teachers are using tactile and visual tools like letter tiles, magnetic boards, and sequencing cards to bring phonics and comprehension to life. At CFRESA, these manipulatives are being modeled in PD sessions, showing how hands-on learning boosts retention and comprehension. AI is also emerging as a practical time-saver, offering personalized feedback and lesson adjustments based on real-time needs (NWGA RESA). These innovations empower teachers to meet students where they are and push them further.

Lean Into Data & Visibility

Across RESAs, leaders are leaning into data and visibility. Literacy Learning Walks (CSRA RESA) and school-based action research cycles (CFRESA) are giving principals practical ways to assess trends and lead literacy growth. By using tools like the Assessing Reading: Multiple Measures book and engaging in root-cause analysis, leaders are shifting from surface-level observations to meaningful instructional guidance.

Build Bridges to Literacy Connections

Metro RESA emphasized the power of shared reading at home. Parents are encouraged to model fluency, ask open-ended questions, and connect the text to everyday experiences. Griffin RESA took it a step further by involving families in Read-Aloud Bingo, scavenger hunts, and take-home questions. These efforts build bridges between school and home, inviting parents to be partners in literacy.

Empower Coaches, Empower Teachers

NEGA RESA’s micro-Zooms on the Science of Learning helped build capacity and leadership among literacy coaches. Meanwhile, CFRESA embedded coaching conversations, routines, and goal-setting into their daily work. CSRA RESA hosts monthly virtual check-ins to align coaching with state initiatives. Coaches are not only growing their own skill sets, but they’re equipping teachers to do the same.
