The Buzz
from Roxbury Village School
April 17, 2023
They say April showers bring May flowers. Given that it's rained most of the day, we certainly hope the flowers are getting ready to bloom in May. May will also bring a lot of important events to Roxbury Village School, such as:
* Day in the Dirt RVS Garden Cleanup and Barbeque (5/7)
* Cognia Testing for our 3rd & 4th grade students (5/2 - 5/3 and 5/9 - 5/10)
* MSMS Caregiver Information Night for current 4th grade students (5/11)
* RVS Music Concert (5/23)
* Early Release Day for Students (5/26)
As a reminder, school will be closed for April Vacation next week. We look forward to seeing everyone back at school on Monday, May 1st!

News from Kindergarten
Well we started the week at 23 degrees and ended it at 81! Wow! We took data about the weather all week- talking about clouds, wind, water, and temperate. Over the course of the week we watched the snow melt, and Friday we uncovered the last buried sled before we cleaned the sleds to put away. Additionally we learned some Super Readers Powers, started words sorting, and did a lot of writing. In math we continued to break whole numbers into parts (part part whole) and create drawings and equations.
News from Grades 1/2
Spring is by far my favorite time of the year. I love the promise of new growth, sunshine and bare feet. We have been busy planting seeds in our classroom. All of the classrooms will be helping to grow beautiful and nutritious items for our whole school garden space. In Science we have been talking about the water cycle, and have been learning what a watershed is. As it is almost Earth Day we have also been talking about ways to keep our water clean, and recognizing the impact we have on the environment.
News from Grades 3/4
In the 3rd and 4th grade classroom, we began a 3 week "Mystery Science- Earth day" unit on endangered species. We learned about what that phrase means, what animals are impacted by it, and how for many species it can be prevented. This launched us into an inquiry based discovery where we will present our findings after the break.
Cognia Testing
As you may have heard Vermont has replaced the SBAC assessment with a new assessment called Cognia. All of our 3rd and 4th grade students at RVS will take this assessment for Reading and Math. Here is our RVS testing schedule:
- ELA for grades 3/4 -- May 2-3 (mornings)
- Math for grades 3/4 -- May 9-10 (mornings)
We thank you in advance for ensuring students arrive on time for school on these days. As always, we will provide a hearty breakfast each morning. If you have any questions or concerns about the Cognia tests, please reach out to Beth. Thanks!
News from Tech
GRADES 3&4
The ¾’s opened documents, formatted Haiku poems that they wrote, and shared the documents with me. The class, as a whole, is becoming proficient with documents. They worked on creating coding games and digital stories in Scratch.
GRADES 1&2
Grades 1 and 2 have been working on keyboarding skills by going through the four levels to play, each has 3 stages in each level. We start at the beginning level each time to learn the home row.
Kindergarten
We continue the work to be proficient with knowing where the letters are, as well as being more confident with the mouse pad. The games are getting easier, so navigating the keyboard and mouse pad is getting better. We continue to use different PBSkids games.
