November 13th is World Kindness Day
Research shows that kindness can increase happiness, self-esteem, and social connection, while decreasing stress and emotional reactivity.
The More You Know…
Identifying Signs of Struggling
Teenagers may not always openly admit that they are struggling with substance use or mental health issues. Pay attention to changes in behavior, such as withdrawal from family, declining grades, sudden mood swings, or increased secrecy. Physical signs like unexplained weight changes, poor hygiene, or unusual tiredness may also be clues. If you notice any of these signs, reach out and start a conversation. Early intervention can prevent more serious problems. For more information on how to start the conversation, refer back to the October newsletters.
At Smoky Hill, we have seen an increase in students vaping on the school bus. It is important to talk to your student about school rules and expectations around substance use. No vaping or substance use of any kind is allowed on school property, including the buses and bus stops. Use of vaping devices and other substances on the school bus could result in a loss of transportation privileges.
Did you know Cherry Creek School District has an Adolescent Substance Use Prevention, Intervention, Resources & Education (ASPIRE) Team of school health professionals that supports students and school communities with substance use prevention, intervention and education? If you feel your child is in need of support, reach out to your school for more information.

Smoky Hill Buffs Pantry
What is Buff's Pantry?
As a class, we have aimed to make a difference in our Smoky Hill community, and we decided to do this by creating a safe space where students can receive the food and hygiene products they need on a weekly basis. We offer multiple types of food, whether it’s canned/boxed or just quick snacks, hygiene products, baby products (diapers/wipes), and clothes/shoes. We receive donations from SECOR, the local community, students, and our CCSD district Food Pantry Liaisons. Last year, we were able to serve 70 families in total. Our goal is to limit food insecurity and strengthen our school holistically.
Weekly, as students scan the QR codes that are placed in every classroom and around the school and we receive orders in the Google Form, Call 2 Action students will create individualized bags for each student. They will then deliver them to the counseling office. Students will be called to the counseling office to pick up their bags. Our hope is to reduce any shame that comes with needing support by keeping this process as anonymous as possible.
Here is the Buff's Pantry Google form link for you to fill out with your needs:

Check us out on the news!!
If you wish to donate:
We are in need of the following items if you have any spare stock in your home or wish to purchase items from our list:

Also, you can have your student drop these off at the main office or bring them to Mrs. Ogide's room (1-11). We will also be running donation drives throughout the year. Stay tuned!

Financial Literacy
Smoky Hill Counselors are working with students to teach them financial literacy. Why is teaching financial literacy important? Financial literacy is essential for all students, regardless of their background or future career path. It equips them with the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate the complexities of personal finance, make informed decisions, and achieve financial security. Below are hyperlinks to resources for parents:
FAFSA applications now open!
SHHS Seniors: Are you going to a 4-year college, 2-year college or a trade school? The FAFSA application is now open. (Free Application for Federal Student Aid)
What is the FAFSA? The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is a form that students complete to determine their eligibility for financial aid. This financial aid can include federal grants, work-study programs, and loans. Many states, colleges and trade schools also use the information from the FAFSA to award their own financial aid packages.
Filling out the FAFSA is free, and it’s the first step in accessing the largest source of financial aid for higher education.

The Importance of Campus Visits
Exploring campuses is a key step in your college or trade school journey. It’s not just about touring buildings—it’s about experiencing the environment, meeting the people, and discovering where you feel most at home. While many families choose to visit during summer or school breaks, there’s also great value in visiting while classes are in session. Doing so allows you to get a true sense of the energy, community, and day-to-day life on campus. Both options can help you decide which schools may be the best fit for you. To help you get started, we’ve included links to campus visit opportunities at colleges and universities across Colorado. You can also Click here for tips on how to get the most out of each visit.
