Kindergarten
Kindergarten has been working on “Self-Regulation” and “Social Awareness.” They learned about the Zones of Regulation including calm down strategies to use when they are upset. Students learned about breathing deeply, counting on fingers, and using self talk to reassure themselves that they will be OK. Students covered self-control, which is an IL state standard. They played red light/green light and freeze dancing to practice being in control of their impulses. Kindergarteners also learned about change and discussed how it is a typical part of life even though it can be stressful. They are beginning a unit on social awareness, which will largely focus on friendships.
1st Grade
1st grade has been working on “Self-Regulation” and “Social Awareness.” They learned about the difference between feelings and emotions and even identified parts of the brain. “Flipping your lid,” for example, means your amygdala is unregulated. They discussed body sensations and how a rumbling stomach may tell us we’re hungry or panting may mean we’re hot or tired. Students then learned about respect, empathy, and manners because they are learning about getting along with others and making friends.
2nd Grade
2nd grade has completed units on “Growth Mindset” and “Goal Setting.” In addition to recognizing attributes of a fixed and growth mindset, students learned about feedback, both how to give and receive feedback. They learned about the importance of accepting feedback because it is information that will help you improve. The next unit was on Goal Setting and students focused on hard work and self awareness, which is necessary to identify strengths and areas of growth.

3rd grade completed an all new unit on the brain. They studied neuroplasticity to better understand the WAY we learn and how connections are made in the brain when we challenge ourselves. Next, students completed a unit on Digital Citizenship. They moved on to learning strategies for thinking positively and being flexible when things don’t go as planned. Last, they brainstormed and created a vision board that identifies the various things each student wants for their future.
