Dear PS 107 Families,

It is November and with Thanksgiving around the corner, all of us at PS 107 are reminding ourselves of the importance of having a gratitude practice. Expressing gratitude is so important because our brains are wired to focus on the negative – this helped us to remember threats to our safety and survive thousands of years ago. But in modern times, that negativity “bias” is a bit too strong, and we need to actively combat it with our own gratitude practice. Research shows that having a regular gratitude practice helps to boost self-confidence, improves patience and resilience, reduces symptoms of depression and anxiety, and fosters a more optimistic outlook on life, even during difficult times.

Starting this past Monday through the Thanksgiving holiday, we are expressing our gratitude for one another at PS 107, leaving little messages of appreciation for our colleagues in their mailboxes, and sharing a daily morning announcement about gratitude. Some of our teachers are doing this as well in their classrooms! If you don’t already have a gratitude practice at home that involves your kids, I encourage you to start one. (Here are some tips on how to do so.) It’s really remarkable how much our mindset shifts with regular reminders of what we appreciate in life.

On that note, last week, one of my supervisors from the District 15 superintendent’s office visited PS 107 for my first performance evaluation of the school year. Together, we visited several classrooms and observed one of our core teams, our Instructional Leadership Team, in action. I share this because this is something for which I am extremely grateful – our incredibly dedicated and talented staff! While the superintendent’s office was visiting to see my leadership practices in action, it was our staff who were the real stars. In every teaching move, in every discussion with students, in every conversation with pedagogues and educational assistants, it was evident that our school’s instructional focus for this year – data-driven small group instruction to improve outcomes for all students – was living and breathing in all that we do at PS 107. I was so proud to show off the important work that we are doing – and so grateful to our staff for making it come alive.

UPCOMING DRILLS

Please note that we will hold our second soft lockdown drill of the fall term next week, before the Thanksgiving break. Teachers will review procedures with students, and if students have questions about why we are doing these kinds of drills, I have asked teachers to share that the purpose of a soft lockdown is to keep them safe in the event that someone gets into the building who shouldn’t be there. It gives time for Agent Sharon and our Building Response Team (BRT) to make sure all students and teachers stay safe. Teachers will also remind students that this is a drill, just like a fire drill. Fires in schools almost never happen — and this kind of danger almost never happens either. But we practice so that we can be safe.

Last but not least, we are still collecting individually-wrapped candy for our main office! Thanks to those of you who have already dropped off treats – we are so grateful.

With so much appreciation for this kind and generous community,

Ms Joanna

DROUGHT WARNING

On November 18, Mayor Eric Adams issued a drought warning for New York City.A drought warning is the second of three levels of water conservation declarations by the city.

As conditions continue to evolve, the city may declare a drought emergency, which involves escalating requirements to reduce water usage.

All New Yorkers are encouraged to conserve water.

Based on Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) guidance, please adopt water-saving habits to reducing water use:

  • Report open fire hydrants and street leaks to 311.

  • Limit unnecessary flushing, as toilets account for a major portion of water use.

  • Reduce shower times.

  • Turn off faucets: Avoid running water while brushing teeth or washing hands.

  • Fix leaks promptly: Report and repair any dripping faucets or running toilets.

  • Run dishwashers and washing machines only when full.

Additional tips for reducing water use can be found at nyc.gov/savewater.

FAIR FARES NYC

Fair Fares NYC is a City program created to help New Yorkers with low incomes manage their transportation costs. For more information, please visit the FAIR FARES NYC website.

HELPFUL TIPS

MAKING SCHOOL DAY DISMISSAL PICK-UP CHANGES

If there is a change to your child’s dismissal, please be sure to note the change on the Daily Dismissal form in Operoo. If it is a same day change, please email your child’s teacher and cc Nadia at nbenlarbi2@schools.nyc.gov in addition to making any changes on the Daily Dismissal form. You can also contact the main office at 718-499-2054.

MAKING AFTERSCHOOL DISMISSAL CHANGES

If you need to add a new pick up person for your child in afterschool, please make sure to update this on 6Crickets (Click Here). Afterschool and PS 107 partner in many ways, but not with our information applications. They can't access Operoo and we can't access 6Crickets.

Thank you for your assistance in ensuring your child's safety 😊

LOWER GRADES

Please be sure to send your children to school with a full change of clothes. Accidents can happen easily when they are younger as they often get distracted and don’t check in with their bodies. Please be sure to return your child with a new set the next day if they need to be replaced.

LABEL!

Please parents, remember to label your student’s water bottles, lunch boxes, backpacks, and clothing with their full name (last names are essential!) and if there is space, please include their class number. We want to be able to return all fabulous items to their rightful owner!

IDENTIFICATION

When entering the school building you must present your ID to the safety agent when signing in.

One helpful tip is to take a picture of your id. Often, we will have our phone with us even if we don’t have our id. This way, you always have it handy :)
