Attendance Matters
The Importance of School Attendance in Kindergarten and First Grade
In Kindergarten and First Grade, every school day matters. These early years are when children build the foundation for reading, math, social skills, and classroom routines. Regular attendance helps students feel confident, connected, and ready to learn.
We understand that illness does occur, and students should stay home when they are truly sick. However, frequent absences , even in the early grades , can make it harder for children to keep up with learning and classroom expectations.
Why Attendance Matters
Research shows that missing school adds up quickly:
-
Students who miss just 2 days per month miss about 10% of the school year, which is considered chronic absenteeism.
-
Studies have found that children who are chronically absent in Kindergarten and First Grade are much less likely to read at grade level by third grade.
-
By middle and high school, chronic absenteeism becomes a strong predictor of dropping out.
Even in the early grades, absences affect learning because children are building skills day by day.
When students miss school, they miss:
-
Important instruction and skill-building
-
Opportunities to practice reading and math
-
Social connections with classmates
-
Consistent routines that support learning
Attendance Letters and Truancy Reporting
To keep families informed, our school sends attendance notices when absences reach a concerning level. Letters are mailed once a student reaches 10% absence, as this is an early indicator that a child may be missing too much instructional time. These absences may be excused or unexcused.
If attendance continues to be a concern, chronic attendance issues may be reported for truancy, as required by state guidelines. Our goal is always to work together with families early to prevent long-term problems.
Working Together
We appreciate your partnership in helping your child succeed. If your family is facing challenges that make regular attendance difficult, please reach out to the school office — we are here to help.
Every day in school is a chance to learn, grow, and thrive.
