Back to School

We look forward to seeing many of you at the high school track on Thursday for our Halloween parade at 8:45. The weather looks cold, but clear. If it does rain, please come in the front door at 8:35 and we'll have the bleachers in the gym set up for parents. The students will then parade by grade through the hall and around the gym twice at 8:45.
Your child is welcome to bring a school appropriate costume with them in the morning. The staff will help them get dressed up before the parade.
One reminder, tomorrow we will dismiss students at 12:30 and there is no school on Friday. If you haven't already, please sign up for a conference with your child's teacher(s). If you'd like to meet with me or Megan McFarland, just send us an email and we'll get it scheduled.
Looking forward to seeing many of you in the building,
Leah Wheelan, Principal

Halloween Parade - October 29
You can send your child with a school appropriate costume in their backpack or in a bag. They will get dressed at school and then we will head out to the high school track and parade around. Parents are invited to watch.
K-2nd School Sing - Novermber 13th
If you have a kindergartener, 1st, or 2nd grader in your family, you are invited to join us for school sing. It will be on Friday, November 13th, at 2:10.
Safety Issues
I apologize for all the safety reminders.
- Please never pass another car in the express loop. We have some students that can be unpredictable and might run the wrong way after getting out of the car.
- The parking lot can be chaotic at dismissal, so holding a younger child's hand while in the lot is advised.
- No cars are allowed in the express drop off loop in the afternoon. We use that for loading buses.
- And last, please keep an eye on your children after dismissal to make sure that they aren't trampling the front gardens or climbing our small trees.
Focus on Citizenship
During the months of October and November, our district has been focusing on teaching students how to be good citizens. This is part of the Vision of a Learner. At HSS that includes discussions during morning meetings on how to be kind and help others. A number of wonderful activities have happened and at the end of the newsletter is a picture of how the students showed appreciation for our cafeteria staff. They have done an amazing job keeping us functioning during lunches and breakfast.
As part of this initiative, we are also celebrating students who exhibit good citizenship.

LION’S CLUB VISION SCREENING - WE THANK YOU!
HSS was fortunate enough to have some members of the Lion’s Club come in on Friday and complete vision screening on the majority of our students. Your child will bring home a form that provides information about the screening. The process does not involve any contact and is very reliable in detecting vision concerns that require follow up appointments with a professional eye doctor.
There are several eye doctors in the Upper Valley. Should you need any help finding a provider or paying for an appointment and/or glasses, please contact me.
How to Get the Most Out of Doctor Appointments
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children are seen at least once a year for a routine wellness examination. Oftentimes these appointments are short, and it can be challenging to address all concerns in a short period of time, especially when you are also managing your child or multiple children in the small exam room!
Here are some suggestions to make the most out of your appointment:
Bring an agenda. Write down questions you have or topics you want to address with the provider.
Bring any forms that need to be filled out ahead of time. Or you can also scan them and submit these forms through a health portal for your provider to review before the appointment.
Bring a list of medications and doses that your child is currently taking to make sure their medical chart accurately reflects the current medication regimen.
Write down any changes to your child’s medical history or medications.
Bring along another adult. This strategy can be helpful to help listen, process and ask clarifying questions. Another adult can also help manage multiple children during the appointment.
Be sure to ask clarifying questions. Don’t be afraid to question something your provider says or suggests. Remember . . . you know your child best.
Be sure to have access to your child’s health portal. This is a super easy way to communicate with the office, request medication renewals and send non - urgent, basic health related questions.
The above mentioned guidelines also hold true for adults during health related appointments. Being prepared ahead of time ensures that you will get the most out of the time you have with your healthcare provider. Good luck at your next appointment!
Take good care,
