Patriot's Day
Dear SWS Families,
What a wonderful start to the school year! Our students continue to amaze us with their enthusiasm, effort, and above all, their kindness. From the classroom to the cafeteria, the playground to the hallways, students are practicing kindness in every corner of our school, and it shows.
Our sixth-grade class deserves special recognition. As the oldest students in our building, they have risen to the challenge of being exceptional leaders, setting a positive example for younger students every day.
One of those leaders, Shaylee Tanzola, led our morning announcements on September 11. She reminded us that Patriot Day is a time to wear red, white, and blue in memory of those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001, and in honor of the many people who showed courage and helped others that day. She asked our school community to carry forward the values of kindness, courage, and coming together when others need us, closing with a simple message: we remember, we honor, and we stand together.
Thank you for partnering with us in raising such thoughtful, caring children.
In Partnership,
Dr. Lisa Schleer
A Quick Reminder About the Realtime Parent Portal
I would love to fill this newsletter with photos of the wonderful learning happening inside our walls, but I am not able to include any classroom photos until every family has completed the required questions in the Realtime Parent Portal.
As a parent myself, I know how much it means to see your own child hard at work. Those photos always warmed my heart, and I want to share that same feeling with you.💙💛
Please take a few minutes to log in to the Realtime Parent Portal and complete the required questions. As soon as everyone has responded, I can start adding photos and bragging about YOUR KIDS HARD AT WORK!
Counselor's Corner with Mrs. Watts
Filling Buckets with Mrs. Watts
Our School Counselor, Mrs. Watts, recently read Have You Filled a Bucket Today? by Carol McCloud with our classes — a story that teaches how our words and actions can "fill" or "empty" the buckets of the people around us. Afterward, students created their own buckets full of kindness ideas: sharing with friends, using kind words, helping someone who's struggling, and including others at playtime. Watch for a handout coming home with ways to keep filling buckets as a family — and feel free to share with Mrs. Watts how your family is filling buckets at home!
Warmly,
Brianna Watts, M.A.

Snapshots of What's Happening Inside SWS
Fourth Grade
Honoring the Flag
Ms. Wesighan's fourth-grade class recently read 30,000 Stitches: The Inspiring Story of the National 9/11 Flag, a moving account of how a flag torn at Ground Zero was stitched back together by people across all fifty states.
Following our gathering at the flagpole today, Ms. Wesighan's class, with help from Ms. Thomas, raised a new flag over our school. Mrs. Amy Lobban generously donated the new flag in honor of her father, and we are grateful for her thoughtful gift.
Before the new flag went up, the children learned from Ms. Thomas how a worn flag is properly retired. Ms. Thomas has been involved in Scouting for many years, and the respectful care and retirement of the U.S. flag has long been an important part of that experience.
The fourth graders also brought their patriotism to the playground, chalking a giant American flag across the outdoor recess area for the whole school to enjoy. It was a meaningful day for our students as we remembered September 11.
First Grade- A note from Ms. Greene:
Our first graders are hard at work in math! Students have been working with math partners and using a variety of strategies to solve addition problems. They are using hands-on manipulatives, pictures, and math stories to help them understand what addition means. Students are practicing “putting together” and “adding to” as they build number sentences and find sums. Our goal is to help students develop a strong understanding of numbers and confidence in solving problems.
On the Horizon at SWS
Our Grade 6 Leaders Are Coming to Visit Classes Next Week!
Each week, two of our sixth grade PAWS Leaders will visit every classroom in the building with a special job: asking students to share what they've learned that week. It might be something from math or reading, a discovery in the library or technology, or something new from health and PE, art, or music. They'll also ask every class one of our favorite questions: "Tell me a few ways your class showed kindness this week."
This is one more way we're showcasing our oldest Bobcats as leaders while celebrating the wonderful learning happening in every classroom, every week. Ask your child what they shared — and watch for highlights on our morning announcements and in future newsletters!
Thank You....
Thank you, Stacy Papp, Alison Green, Amanda Newton, and Jo-Ann Williamson, for kicking off the garden weeding. We are off to a great start!
