A Message From Principal Miller
Dear Families,
What a beautiful week it has been! Our students loved spending time outside in the sunshine—although a few came in reporting it was too hot. As we head into spring break, we hope your family has a wonderful week filled with exactly what you need: rest, fun, and quality time together.
As a reminder, if your child ends break feeling sick, please keep them home. With a new variant of COVID circulating, we want to do our best to keep our students healthy, especially as it appears to spread quickly among children. Thank you for your care and attention to this.
It has been a big and exciting few weeks at Decatur! Our fifth graders attended camp, fourth graders traveled to Olympia, third graders are back to planning their Mount Rainier field trip, and our second graders are deep into their animal research projects. Decatur has been a very busy place!
When we return from break, we will have a couple of weeks before beginning our statewide Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBA) testing for students in grades 3–5. Our testing dates are:
- May 12
- May 14
- May 19
- May 21
Fifth graders will also take the Science SBA on April 28.
If your child has headphones, we ask that they bring them on May 12, as there are portions of the assessment that include audio. We do have some headphones available, but not enough for all students, so any assistance with this is greatly appreciated.
We are also excited to share that we will be welcoming over 60 new students to Decatur next year, increasing our enrollment by approximately 20 students! Classroom configurations are still to be determined as we wait for any staffing adjustments in June. We will keep you informed as soon as we have more information.
On behalf of the entire Decatur staff, we wish you a wonderful spring break. We look forward to welcoming our students back and hearing all about their adventures!

A Message From Ms. Bastasch:
SAVE THE DATE: Decatur Field Day will be Tuesday, June 9th , 2026. Field Day takes place before lunch, and more details will be shared as the date nears. If you’d like to help in the pre-event planning, please email Ms. Bastasch jdbastasch@seattleschools.org This pre-event support may include monitoring the sign up genius, doing a walk-through of materials the week before with her, laying out the equipment the day before so it’s ready for the morning, and extra kindness to Ms. Bastasch during the event. Thank you.
Nature Bridge Camp
Our 5th grade students had an incredible time engaging in collaborative scientific learning at NatureBridge. Thank you to Ms. Rosman, Ms. Rifkin and all of our amazing volunteer chaperones! We would also like to thank our PTA and everyone who contributed their time and resources to make this experience possible!
Science Night
The next PTA hosted event is Science Night on May 14. Students work either alone or in pairs to design a project and explore a scientific method. If your student is interested in participating in the science fair, we are asking you to sign them up here by April 20th, even if they haven’t quite settled on their project idea yet. The PTA will provide each entrant with a tri-fold project board, and this will help us make sure we purchase enough boards.
Student sign up for Science Night
For Science Night, we welcome parents to come and share too! Are you into geology and have a great rock collection? Are you an engineer who loves a good raspberry pi project? Whatever your niche, we would love to have you come set up at a table and show our little gators the possibilities in science and engineering. Our parent volunteers last year were very popular, and we hope to have even more this year. Sign up here today!

Important Reminer
Except when Nurse Amy is here on Mondays, our front office is closed from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. as office staff are on playground or lunchroom duty at that time. This makes pick-ups and drop-offs during that hour particularly challenging. We appreciate your patience and understanding.
Gratitude for Decatur Volunteers!
Just a note to check your volunteer status and make updates, changes and renew your background checks before they expire. As we continue to perfect the new volunteer application process, we have found less issues if we can stay ahead of the expiration dates and keep dashboards updated to include your school assignments you desire.
