Hicks Happenings
Hicks Homecoming!
Our Hicks Homecoming was a huge success today filled with raffles, Ring Pops for all in attendance and culminating with the crowning of our new Prince and Princess, Tavon and Ava at the Pep Rally assembly! We even were treated a special Homecoming routine by our cheerleaders! The entire Homecoming Court conducted themselves with class, grace and pride! Plus with all of your help the percentage of absent students was only 5%. What a great day to be a Hawk! We love our kids and all the fun we had today with them!

About the House System and What is NEW!
You may have heard that in the lunch room that the students sit in houses. The house system is similar to what is used in the Harry Potter series along with in real life at the Ron Clark Academy in Atlanta. This system encourages positive behavior, builds confidence, and motivates students to support one another. House events, chants, and celebrations bring energy and unity to the entire school. Students feel seen, valued, and empowered to grow into the best version of themselves. Overall, the House System transforms the school environment into one that is vibrant, inclusive, and purpose-driven. Through healthy competition, students earn points for demonstrating excellence in academics, behavior, and leadership.
Each house has a hand signal that represents their house. When an adult says 'Represent!' all students and staff use the hand signal, stop what they are doing and be quiet. You can even practice with our student at home!
Capturing Kids Hearts
Hicks Elementary and Wayne-Westland Schools has adopted, Capturing Kids' Hearts (CKH), which is a program that helps build strong relationships between teachers and students, which improves behavior, attendance, and academic performance. For the month of October, we are focusing being able to self-direct. An easy way to do this is finding the good in others. There are great conversation starters on the bottom of the graphic. Let's help all of our Hawks to Think, Choose, Act!
Getting to Know our Staff!
Each newsletter we will be showcasing a few staff members to get to know them better because the Hicks community is one big, happy family! A huge shout out to our new family members, we have over 6 this year!
Parking Lot Expectations
Safety is our number 1 priority in the parking lot. Please adhere to these expectations so the parking lot can be as safe as possible. Please pack your patience and don't speed, We have had several close calls. We value your time and have tried to make arrival and dismissal as expedient as possible.
Cars should pull into the outside lane (closest to school) to pick up kids, and once they pick up their kid, pull to the left (inside lane) to leave. Please see image below.
Please do not park in the fire lane - which means do not get out of your car. The fire lane is the entire front loop.
Pull as close as possible to the curb when picking up a student. Students shouldn't be running in front of a line of traffic to get to their car.
When you have your kids, pull into the left lane.
When exiting, if you're in the right lane when you get to the exit, go right. If you're in the left lane, go left. There have been several near accidents at the exit.
Teach kids to get into the car on the passenger side so they’re not crossing behind or in front of other cars.
Please also ask kids to get into the car as quickly as possible.
Attendance Matters!
Kids can't learn math and reading or have good relationships with teachers and friends if they aren't in school regularly. Aim for 8 is our attendance motto for this year. We are encouraging families to have their kids miss no more than 8 days for the entire school year. Being at school from the first bell to the last bell is also important. Good stuff is happening all day long at Hicks! As much as possible, schedule family trips during school vacations and appointments outside of school hours. Keep a regular bedtime schedule to make mornings easier. Thank you for your help with this. Elementary school attendance impacts high school graduation rates and even college completion. Let's set our kids up for success by giving them a good foundation.

IChat Forms Online
The district has finally put the IChat form online. This form needs to filled out if you want to volunteer at the school or chaperone a field trip. If you have already turned one in, you do not have to repeat the process. If for some reason you are not approved to volunteer, you will receive a letter in the mail stating why. When filling out this form, please be reminded that if you do not include a picture of your government issued ID, it will not count. Thanks so much and we hope streamlining the process helps out.
