Gift sets RWPS on the path to a bold future Gift sets RWPS on the path to a bold future

GRADUATES WILL BE DIGITALLY FLUENT

A grateful Red Wing School Board on Monday accepted alumnus Dwight Diercks' groundbreaking $3.2 million pledge to help Red Wing Public Schools become a center of excellence in artificial intelligence education. This is one of the largest gifts in district history.

Diercks, a 1986 graduate of Red Wing Central High School and senior vice president of software engineering at NVIDIA, made the five-year commitment with his wife, Dian, to support “Flight Path 2030,” a districtwide initiative aimed at preparing students for a future shaped by AI. The pledge comes at a time when schools nationwide are exploring how to responsibly integrate artificial intelligence into teaching and learning.

“This extraordinary gift lays the groundwork for bold thinking about how we prepare students for the future and support the staff who guide them. We’re deeply grateful to Dwight and Dian Diercks for investing in our district’s future,” Board Chair Ryan Riester said.

Superintendent Bob Jaszczak said the goal is that by 2030 every Winger graduate will be digitally fluent, ethically grounded, and workforce-ready.

Community gives and gives to benefit students Community gives and gives to benefit students

One of the things that quickly stood out to me when I took the job with Red Wing Public Schools a year ago is this community’s generosity. Again and again people have shared their time, talent and resources – and often without being asked. This community cares about its kids!

As we prepare for the new school year, let’s take a moment to reflect on your tremendous support in 2024-2025. Here are a few of the highlights:

  • Many people tutored, chaperoned, read to or otherwise supported students. This is especially true in the younger grades, but isn’t exclusive to them. The volunteer hours were invaluable.

  • Residents and businesses alike demonstrated their appreciation for our staff throughout the year, culminating in May when a group of parents organized a districtwide weeklong observance.

  • Individuals and civic group financial contributions topped $377,000.

  • Red Wing Public Schools Foundation granted $74,000 to fund teacher-led enrichment activities, field trips and other “extras” for our students.

  • Red Wing College Promise keeps growing, thanks to The Jones Family Foundation and Minnesota State College Southeast. Combine this with local scholarships given to Class of 2025 and the investment in their futures approached $1 million.

  • 3M, 3M Maps and Heart of America renovated two high school classrooms, creating Future Maker Labs for robotics and mechatronics.

  • Honor Dakota Project and Prairie Island Indian Community projects touched lives preK-12.

  • United Way of Goodhue, Wabasha & Pierce Counties again distributed backpacks packed with school supplies.

This is by no means an exhaustive list. Some of these gifts made headlines, certainly, but please know there is no such thing as a small gift: Be it a box of crayons for a classroom or $10 to a school food pantry, every gift positively impacts a child in some way. There really is no adjective big enough to describe what your gifts mean to our students, so two simple words will have to do: Thank you.

Complete your application now or at a school open house

District leaders highly recommend that all families complete an Application for Educational Benefits. Your help in completing these forms will make a big difference. The application form is available online through SchoolCafe in English and Spanish.

United Way helps to meet supply demand United Way helps to meet supply demand

Thank you, United Way of Goodhue, Wabasha & Pierce Counties, for again holding a school supply event for students. Shopping for school supplies? Save receipts Shopping for school supplies? Save receipts

zoom_out_map

You can expect school supply sales to pop up this month, so start saving those receipts. Did you know that Minnesota families may get a tax break for the back-to-school supplies they purchase?

Families who purchase qualifying supplies might be eligible to claim K-12 tax benefits on their state income tax return, the Minnesota Department of Revenue says. Two tax benefits can help Minnesota families pay expenses related to their child’s education:

  • the refundable K-12 Education Credit (income limits apply) and

  • the K-12 Education Subtraction (no income limits).

For details, go to K-12 Education Subtraction and Credit.

To qualify for either program, you must:

  • Have a qualifying child attending kindergarten through 12th grade at a public, private, or qualified home school.

  • Have paid “qualified education expenses” during the year for that child’s education.

For details, go to Qualifying Expenses for the K-12 Education Subtraction and Credit.

Note: You may not use the same qualified education expenses to claim both the subtraction and the credit. Learn more by visiting the Minnesota Department of Revenue website links highlighted above or consulting a tax professional.
