Junior High Girls work hard at their VolleyBall Camp Junior High Girls work hard at their VolleyBall Camp

Article by S. Steinfort

Summer for girls athletics at Valley Heights looks like Sum”more”. Here it is by the numbers….

There have been a total of 34 high school girls and 19 junior high girls attend weight room sessions. If you come into the weight room on any given day, you would find an average of 40 girls becoming faster and stronger. Weights begins with agilities, plyometrics and sprints on the track and then moves into the weight room where you can see young ladies improving on hang clean, bench and squat maxes with auxiliary lifts in between.

At the Seaman Tournament, VHHS had 2 teams that played in the JV division. They played all bigger size schools such as Rock Creek, Seaman, Jeff West, Hayden, Louisburg, Sabetha, Silver Lake and Riley County. The younger team went 0-6 on the day but improved with each match just working on rotations and fundamentals of the game. The older team played with only 5 players but went 5-1, losing to Seaman, but tying with them for first place in the JV division.

The Abilene Tournament will be a new experience but will provide 7 matches on the 1st day and 6 matches on the 2nd day playing teams such as Abilene, Belle Plaine, Ellinwood, Axtell, Wamego, Salina South, Salina Central, Beloit, Clay Center, Smith Center and Sylvan-Lucas.

On another note, the volleyball seniors including Tessa Miller, Lilly Busey, Haily Stoudt and Anne Toerber have been meeting at 6:30 am before weights to undergo “Captains and Leaders Training” with the help of Coach Steinfort and Proactive Coaching videos. They have declared the 4 Covenants for the Valley Heights Volleyball Program to be:

  1. Steadfast Determination

  2. Fellowship for Generations

  3. Fierce, Total Toughness

  4. Vitality

Summertime @ Valley Heights

There are open gyms after weights for basketball 2 mornings a week with softball open field on Fridays. Volleyball has an open gym on Tuesday evenings. The basketball team has organized morning scrimmages with other local teams and softball has also scheduled some pick up games. Volleyball has traveled to Topeka for a Seaman Tournament and will go to Abilene for a 2 day varsity tournament as well as to Washburn for a camp/tournament. This is all after kicking off the season with their 2 day team camp at VHHS. The junior high was involved in this camp as well.
