National Special Education Day is December 2nd
History Of Special Education Day
It all started in 1972 with the U.S. District Court lawsuit Mills versus the Board of Education filed in the District of Columbia. The denial of publicly funded education for special children, including those with learning disabilities, was ruled unlawful. This case paved the way for acts such as the Education for All Handicapped Children Act of 1975, approved and passed by President Gerald Ford on November 29 of the same year. The Act was the country’s first official law addressing special education.
States receiving federal funds were required to provide full access to children with special needs. In 1986, the law was revised to include more support for parents and educators and to advance education plans. In 1990, the name of this landmark act changed to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act or IDEA. Over the years, clauses have been added to address issues and ensure that the standards of education for special children are on par with the overall educational system.
IDEA not only established the rights of children with learning disabilities, but laid the groundwork for teachers and families to work together, and ensure there are services and resources available for support. Special Education Day started in 2005 — on IDEA’s 30th anniversary.

Spotlight on PLC
Sparking a Connection - Martha Rocco
Midway through the 2nd quarter of the year, we are starting to “feel it.” The days are shorter and colder, we are sick, the kids (including your own) are sick, and energy can run low. One way to spark new energy is to lean into our PLC. We can start by leaning into our individual PLTs, but some great ideas and creativity can come from extending that reach.
As our principal correctly stated, we have a lot of talent in this building. Some of the best ideas can come from a colleague you don’t interact with as often. An easy way to do this is to look at the document in the shared drive to see all the awesome work other PLTs are doing. You can even bring in the work from great teachers in other content areas to better contextualize content for your kids. By seeing, appreciating, and referring to the work being done here, we can create community, lean on it, and help students grow.

WMS i-Ready Data
Below is a snapshot of some i-Ready instructional data from the whole school
Upper left is the percentage of lessons passed as a school by subject. Alerts will show up in the i-Ready dashboard if a student is not passing the same lesson topic multiple times.
Lower left is the total time and lessons passed as a school so far this school year, let’s see how big we can get them this year (could be fun to show your homeroom)!
Right side is a quick graph of how many students met their minutes goal for a previous week (i-Ready sees the best growth if students are above 30 minutes per subject per week). These percentages were calculated in a new way to more accurately reflect the percentage of students meeting goal minutes.

Going Backward - By Design
As teachers, we often wrestle with questions like: Did we have an impact? Did our students truly learn, and did we equip our students with the skills we intended? This teaching profession is hard work, and planning and executing lessons with intention can be mind-boggling, with so many things coming at us at warp-factor speed.
To harness the power of instruction, we want to look backward to move students forward; in other words, use the backward-by-design process to plan instruction. McTighe and Wiggins designed the process with two key ideas: 1) focus on teaching and assessing for understanding and learning transfer, and 2) design curriculum “backward” from those ends. This model will help focus on learning rather than teaching when creating unit plans. We sometimes get caught up in planning by constructing a list of activities related to topics/content. Unfortunately, they might not meet the test of deepening student understanding and transfer of learning. These six indicators of understanding will help guide you in your unit design process — the capacity to explain, interpret, apply, shift perspective, empathize, and self-assess.
The first step in unit planning is for your PLT to review your unit assessment carefully. Look at each assessed item and discuss strategic moves to help students learn and master essential skills and concepts. McTighe and Wiggins state, “Ultimately, teaching should equip learners to be able to use or transfer their learning (i.e., meaningful performance with content). This is the result we always want to keep in mind.”
You might consider discussing the following questions during the backward-by-design process in your PLT:
How will we know if students have achieved the desired results?
What will we accept as evidence of student understanding and their ability to use (transfer) their learning in new situations?
How will we evaluate student performance in fair and consistent ways?
This will be a multi-week topic. Next week, we will address how to determine assessment evidence. Should this capture your interest, please seek me out for templates that can be used to help use the backward-by-design process in your unit planning.
