In the United States National Hispanic Heritage Month begins each year on September 15th and ends on October 15th. During this time we recognize the contributions made and the important presence of Hispanic and Latino Americans to the United States and celebrate their heritage and culture. Hispanic Heritage Month was established in 1988 by President Ronald Reagan. The term Hispanic or Latino, refers to Puerto Rican, South or Central American, or other Spanish culture. September 15th was chosen as the starting point for the celebration because it is the anniversary of independence of five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. They all declared independence in 1821. In addition, Mexico, Chile, and Belize celebrate their independence days on September 16th, September 18th, and September 21st.

Marlins, this week we’re asking: When did President Reagan establish Hispanic Heritage Month? Place one answer slip in a Cultural Corner box by the end of the school day this Thursday for your chance to win a prize. Your Student Council members will select 1 primary and 1 upper grade student from a raffle during Friday morning announcements.
