Lutherville Lab Report
What's gone down & what's coming up at the leopards' lair.
October 2, 2026
Lutherville Families,
Can you believe we are at the halfway point of the first quarter already! One-eighth of the school year is in the books. You should have received emails again today with your child's attendance and grades. We are hoping students have two or fewer absences (three or less for the quarter to be in the 92%-ers) and grades are looking good!
Looking back on the last few weeks, a big celebration was our Goals Parade! At the start of each year we take a pause for students to set goals for themselves for the year. Sometimes academic, sometimes social, often both. The students make a poster committing to their goals and one Friday morning our Leopards cheer one another as they parade with their poster and feel the love from their schoolmates. This is book-ended with a Progress Parade in the spring where students celebrate their growth. At the end of the parade last Friday we had a fun students v. staff competition of Rock-Paper-Scissors. The students kicked our tails!
We are looking forward to Fall Family Night on Tuesday October 13th! This is a fantastic evening with a full building every year. One of our cherished parts of the evening, traditionally, is the Cultural Fair celebrating the diversity of our community. We hope you'll consider sharing your cultural roots and encourage you to contact Mrs. Tunison at atunison@bcps.org if so. This year the night will also feature the PTA Picnic in the cafe, so look forward to free food and another layer of fun. You don't want to miss Fall Family Night!
For parent involvement -- a couple upcoming pathways. There is a PTA General Body Meeting on Monday at 5:00 in the school library. We hope to see you there. Later this month, our Equity Guiding Coalition -- a group of parents and staff attentive to the culture and climate of our school -- are hosting a book study. We'll first meet October 27th to discuss chapters one and two of The Sacred Art of Teaching and are inviting families and staff from our feeder middle schools to join us. More information on both, below.
Wishing our community a wonderful weekend and smooth transition into all that fall has to offer.
In partnership,
-Mr. McComb
Students and staff cheer for each other last Friday.

School Counseling Newsletter
Dear Parents and Guardians,
As part of our School Counseling Program, your child’s class will have the opportunity to engage in monthly counseling lessons throughout the school year. In October, students will discuss the topic of bullying prevention. These lessons help students understand what bullying is, how it can affect others, and—most importantly—how they can stand up for themselves and support their classmates in positive ways. Below is the list of books/resources used in each lesson.
Pre-Kindergarten: The Way I Feel by Janan Cain
Kindergarten: Howard B. Wigglebottom Learns About Bullying by Howard Binkow
1st grade: Have You Filled a Bucket Today by Carol McCloud
2nd grade: I Walk with Vanessa by Kerascoet
3rd grade: One by Kathryn Otoshi
4th grade: Simon's Hook by Karen Gedig Burnett
5th grade: My Secret Bully by Trudy Ludwig
The goal of the monthly core curriculum counseling lessons is to help promote the social emotional, academic, and career development of our students. Please feel free to contact me with any questions about the program. I can be reached via phone at 443 809-7835 or via email at ikiewe@bcps.org.
Respectfully,
Mrs. Kiewe
School Counselor

PTA General Meeting
Join us on Monday, October 5, from 5:00-6:00 PM in the LL Library for our next PTA General Meeting. Whether you're brand new to Lutherville Lab or have been part of our community for years, we would love to see you there. This is a great opportunity to connect with other families, hear updates about upcoming programs and events, and share your ideas as we continue planning a successful year for our students and school community.
Free childcare is available, and you do not need to be a PTA member to attend. Everyone is welcome.
PTA Picnic Finds a New Home
While the weather kept us from gathering outside, we're excited to announce that our postponed PTA Picnic has found a new indoor home! Join us in the cafeteria on Tuesday, October 13, from 5:30-7:30 PM during Fall Family Night.
Stop in between all the exciting activities happening throughout the building to enjoy food, fellowship, and time with fellow Leopard families. We'll also be holding our raffles and silent auction, featuring some fantastic prizes and experiences generously donated by our beloved teachers and community partners.
Raffle tickets will be available for purchase at:
- 1 ticket for $1
- 6 tickets for $5
- 14 tickets for $10
For silent auction items, the highest bid wins.
Can't make it that evening? You can still participate! Email LuthervilleLabPTA@gmail.com by October 11 and we'll help get you entered into raffles and place your silent auction bids remotely.
Ledo Pizza Spirit Nights Return
One of last year's favorite community events is back! Join us at Ledo Pizza on Putty Hill Avenue in Towson on October 19 and October 20 from 5:00 PM until close.
Take a night off from cooking and cleaning, enjoy some delicious square pizza, and connect with other Lutherville Lab families while supporting our school. Best of all, 20% of sales will be donated back to support our Leopards. We can't wait to see our community fill the restaurant once again!
It's Almost Here: The Great November Reading Rally
November is going to be an exciting month at Lutherville Lab as we launch The Great November Reading Rally, a month-long celebration of literacy, books, and reading.
This year, we're moving the Scholastic Book Fair from February to November so families can shop ahead of the holidays, discover exciting new books, and help students build their home libraries just in time for a month dedicated to reading. The Book Fair will also help kick off the excitement as students begin tracking reading minutes during our Read-A-Thon and other literacy activities throughout the month.
Most importantly, we're continuing a tradition that reflects our commitment to literacy for all: every student will leave the Book Fair with a free book, regardless of whether they make a purchase. We want every Leopard to have the opportunity to discover a book they'll love and enjoy reading at home.
Throughout November, families can also look forward to the Read-A-Thon, library partnerships, read-aloud opportunities, literacy-themed family events, and much more. Our goal is to bring our entire school community together around a shared love of reading while raising funds that directly support our students and staff.
More details will be shared soon, but we're already looking for community partners to help support our largest fundraiser of the year. If you know a local business that may be interested in sponsoring the Reading Rally, please contact LuthervilleLabPTA@gmail.com. Every dollar raised through sponsorships helps offset our fundraising goals and reduces the amount we need to raise through family contributions.
Together, we're building a stronger community of readers while supporting opportunities for every Leopard to learn, grow, and thrive.
As always, thank you for supporting the PTA and helping us make Lutherville Lab such a special place for our students, staff, and families.
