Hello Tomahawk Families!

As we welcome October, I continue to be amazed by the incredible support, involvement, and outpouring of love that make the Tomahawk community so special. September seemed to fly by, and our school is thriving because of the strong partnership we share with our families, staff, and community members.

We are looking forward to Parent-Teacher Conferences this month and the opportunity to celebrate student successes, discuss growth, and strengthen our partnership in supporting every child. These conversations are an important part of ensuring that each student continues to learn, grow, and shine.

Thank you for partnering with us and for entrusting us with your children each day. The kindness, encouragement, and support we have received this year remind us that when we work together, amazing things happen for kids. My door is always open, and I welcome your questions, concerns, ideas, and celebrations. Thank you for helping make Tomahawk a place where every piece matters and every student knows they belong.

How do you report an absence or change in attendance (late drop off, early pick-up, or way home change)?

Either of these 2 ways works the best:

1. Call the office 24/7 at 913.780.7690

2. Email the office 24/7 at thattendance@olatheschools.org - we ask that all absences, way home changes, and late arrivals/early departures go through the office since the teacher may have a sub or limited access to email/SeeSaw during the school day.

Remember these things:

  • Contact us by 9:15 am for an absence
  • Include a lunch choice if coming in late (we have to order by 9:15am)
  • Contact us by 2pm for way home changes
Absences- Contact the office by 9:15am- Include Lunch Choice if coming in late.
Click for more details on Attendance Policies. Call office at 913-780-7690 anytime and leave a message or email thattendance@olatheschools.org. Students will be counted as unexcused if parents have not contacted the office on the day of the absence.

Our custodians are so important at Tomahawk!. Their dedication to keeping our facility open, healthy and looking great is a very essential part of our school. Without them we could not operate as we do. We want to send a BIG THANK YOU to Jose Escamilla, our daytime custodian and Jesus Calvillo, our nighttime custodian for all of their hard work and dedication to Tomahawk!

Parent Teacher Conferences Parent Teacher Conferences

User uploaded image
zoom_out_map

Thanks to those of you who have already signed up for a conference for your student. Conferences will be held at various times from Monday, October 12 - Thursday, October 15. Not all teachers will be available on all days.

All elementary families will need to choose a time on the appropriate grade level/teacher Sign up Genius that was sent out in an alert earlier in the week. If you cannot find the email, please contact your child's teacher or the office and we will resend you the link. Please sign up by October 1 if you have not already. Teachers will be contacting those who have not signed up.

Please note: If you have requested an Interpreter (example: Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese, Berber) for your conference, the office has already contacted you to schedule those conferences and sent you an email confirming the conference. Please do NOT sign up for another conference on the Sign Up Genius. If you require an interpreter and the office has not yet contacted you to schedule a time, please call 780-7690 immediately or email thattendance@olatheschools.org and we will set up a time for you. Conferences with interpreters have to be scheduled by the office so please do not sign up on the Sign Up Genius if you need an interpreter.

Grade cards information will be provided at conferences and will be available in ParentVue sometime during conference week.

Please return the picture packet to your child's teacher before Oct 20 and indicate that you would like to have your child's picture retaken. More information coming home closer to the date.

Fall Parties and Parade Fall Parties and Parade

Tomahawk students in grades K-5 who wish to participate in Halloween Costumes should wear them to school on Friday, October 30th. Please consider what additional items your student might need to have a successful day (recess shoes, etc.). We will be having an outdoor parade of costumes at 2:50pm. Parents are invited to the outdoor parade. Should there be inclement weather, the parades will be live-streamed for the parents to watch from home.

There are certainly a lot of costume options out there! While your child may opt for a scary or gory costume for Halloween night trick-or-treating, these types of costumes are not appropriate for school. Please help your child use discretion when choosing a costume to wear to school for our parade and parties. For the safety and comfort of everyone at Tomahawk, it is very important to avoid frightening costumes that appear bloody, gory or violent. Weapons, including look-alike guns, knives, spears, scythes, etc., should be left at home on party day. Masks that circulate colored liquid must be kept turned off while at school. If you have questions or concerns, please check with Mrs. Baucum.

Classroom parties for K-5 students will follow after the parade.

NEW THIS YEAR!

This year, Tomahawk families are working together to collect candy, snacks and treats for our classroom fall parties. All donations will be combined and divided equally so that every student receives the same special goodie bag! Please use the Sign Up Genius link below to donate. Donations should be dropped off at the Tomahawk office by October 13 and labeled “Fall Parties.” The signup can also be found on the PTO website.

https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0F4FADAC22A5F9C52-66026398-tomahawk

There will be a goodie-bag packing party on October 20th, in the Tomahawk teachers’ lounge at 7pm. Parents are encouraged to join us as we assemble and prepare the bags for party day. Many hands make light work!

We are still looking for helpers in a few classrooms! If you are interested in helping and have not already completed the volunteer interest form or scanned the QR code, please complete the Classroom Party Volunteer Form. If you have already submitted the form, there is no need to complete it again. A member of the PTO Board will contact you at the email address you provided with additional information.

Early Childhood/Pre-K Parade and Parties On Thursday, October 29

Early Childhood and Jump Start Preschool morning classes will have their parade and parties on Thursday, October 29 at 10:50am and 2:50pm.

  • Parades (10:50am & 2:50pm) with parties to follow in the classrooms.
  • Teachers will send out sign ups for parents to contribute to party snack.

Día de Los Muertos “Day of the Dead” altar, or ofrenda, is a welcoming display built by families to guide and honor loved ones who have passed away. As a school we want to build our own Ofrenda with our community’s help.

What to do? How to help?

Email a picture to Elsa Alvear (eaalvear@olatheschools.org) or Amanda Doll (amdoll@olatheschools.org) of your loved one who has passed away. Mrs. Elsa and Mrs. Doll will have some helpers to do the Ofrenda, which will be displayed outside the gym last week of October and first week of November.

The staff members who work with students outside of the classroom (Art, PE. Music, Computer, Library, Counselors, Lunch room staff) will vote on the representative for each classroom. That student will receive a yard sign for the month. We are so Proud of all of our Tomahawk students, and showcase their strengths in many ways through out each grade level and each class. The start of the school year is a great time to remind our school community of the measures we take to keep students healthy and prevent the spread of communicable diseases. We refer to the Johnson County Department of Health and Environment (JCDHE) recommendations when determining the need to send a student home from school.

  • Students are to be fever-free for 24 hours WITHOUT the use of a fever reducing medication before returning to school.
  • Students with vomiting or diarrhea are to be symptom-free for 24 hours before returning to school.
  • Students with blisters and/or honey-colored crusts on their face should remain home until cleared by a doctor as non-infectious or until 24 hours of antibiotic treatment is received.
  • Students diagnosed with influenza should remain home until fever-free for 24 hours WITHOUT the use of a fever reducing medication AND symptoms are improving.

Flu Shot Myths & Facts

October is a great time to get your child’s flu shot! It never fails, every year we have kids diagnosed with the flu right before Halloween or another fun holiday event, and suddenly they’re missing out. Let’s clear up a few common myths we hear every year:

MYTH: The flu shot can give you the flu.
FACT: It can’t. Some kids may have a sore arm, feel tired, or run a low-grade fever afterward, but the flu shot does not cause influenza.

MYTH:
Healthy kids don’t really need one.
FACT: Even healthy kids can get very sick from the flu, and they can easily spread it to younger siblings, grandparents, and others who may be at higher risk. In just the last year, we have seen previously healthy children develop serious complications from influenza, including pneumonia, lung abscesses, lymph node abscesses, complicated sinus infections, and viral muscle inflammation that left kids unable to walk comfortably for several days—just to name a few. And don’t forget, getting your child vaccinated isn’t only about protecting them. You’re also helping protect the other kids in their classroom, including those who may be at higher risk for complications.

MYTH
: We got the flu shot and still tested positive for the flu, so it didn’t work!
FACT: The flu vaccine isn’t 100% effective at preventing every case of influenza. However, one of its biggest benefits is helping decrease the severity of illness if your child does get the flu. Vaccinated children are less likely to develop serious complications or need hospitalization.

Before the holiday season gets into full swing, add a flu shot to your fall checklist!

Stay well and enjoy all the fall fun,

The Color Walk is our biggest fundraiser of the year. We raised over $11,000 last year and celebrated with a dunk tank, pie in the face, an all school movie with popcorn, a huge inflatable party and so much more!

This year's Color walk will be Thursday, October 1st for Early Childhood and Jumpstart and Friday, October 2nd for K-5. Cheddar Up donation link is open now. Reach out to Breanne Harris if you would like to be involved in Color Walk planning (Breannepotter@gmail.com)

5th Grade Legacy

Hello 5th Grade Parents!

Every year, the 5th Grade Legacy Committee works to raise money to pay for the 5th grade t-shirts, the End of Year field trip, and the End of Year Celebration for all 5th grade students. In order to do that, we need your help! We have several bake sales and pastries with parents scheduled throughout the year that are ran by 5th graders and their parents.

The bake sales are held during fall and spring conferences from 4-8pm on Oct. 12-14 (Bake sale sign up genius) & Feb. 8-10, and during lunch hours 11am-1pm (dates TBD). We will need donations of individually wrapped homemade or store baked goods, and volunteers to set up and run the bake sale. Pastries with parents will be Nov. 18 & March 12 before school (7:15-8:40am), and we’ll need 5th grade parents and students to set up and run the sale.

We are open to ideas so please email Micki at mickireed@live.com with other ideas or suggestions.

For the bake sales, items will be sold for $1 each so please have goodies divided into individual bags for quick and easy selling. Items can be dropped off in the office the day before or morning of the bake sale.

Thank you all for your support as we make our kids 5th grade year an amazing one!

Supporting Our Staff All Year Long

Stay tuned for more ways to support our wonderful Tomahawk teachers and staff throughout the school year! We are developing a coordinated plan that will make it easy for families to see current needs and find meaningful ways to contribute as part of our school community.

We continue to be blown away by the generosity of our Tomahawk families. By keeping these efforts organized in one place, we hope to spread that support consistently and keep the appreciation going all year long!

In the meantime, visit the Staff Favorites List under the Support Our School section of the PTO website. There, you can find your teacher’s favorite snacks, drinks, supplies and other items if you feel led to show them a little extra appreciation.
