Wednesday Weekly
IMESD/OTREN Regional Coaches Huddle - 2/15/23
February Coaches Corner
We hope you had a wonderful Valentine's Day and are enjoying the recent sunshine!
This week's resources are center around three areas: (Celebrating, Sharing, & Exploring)
- Celebrating CTE Teachers and their accomplishments in the classroom during national CTE month. Our CTE teachers have a huge impact on student success and deserve our support and appreciation! Let's all find time to show our CTE teachers gratitude!
- Sharing an opportunity to learn together through a book study on The PD Book by Elena Aguilar and Lori Cohen. We hope that you are able to join us as we explore this great resource and learn new strategies for preparing and delivering engaging PD.
- Exploring John Hattie's Visible Learning research and our continued work with Katie Smith from the Core Collaborative. In our recent instructional coaches huddle with Katie we took a deeper look at the importance of creating self-empowered learners or assessment capable learners in our schools which has a 1.33 effect size according to Hattie's research.
We are looking forward to our next regional coaches huddle! We hope everyone can join us on March 8th from 9:30 am to 11:30 am at the Pendleton IMESD office.
Regards,
Ayla, Beth, & Jennifer
This Week's Featured Resources
CTE Month
February is National CTE Month! As instructional coaches let's celebrate our hard working CTE teachers by checking in, offering support, and showing our appreciation for all they do to support the students in our region.
Often CTE teachers need additional support from instructional coaches as their path to education is different than most teachers. Many come to the classroom straight from industry and need assistance with the pedagogical strategies which are needed for effective teaching. With additional coaching and support, CTE teachers have the opportunity to make a big impact on student's path to a successful career!
Let's Learn Together!
We would like to invite you to join us in a book study around the book The PD Book by Elena Aguilar and Lori Cohen. We will be meeting every other Wednesday at 8:30am for one hour to discuss a chapter. Click here to see an outline of the sessions. Empowered Learners
Self-Empowered Learner Definition (as defined through our work with Core Collaborative):
A student that takes ownership of their learning by asking and answering the three formative questions:
1) Where am I headed?
2) Where am I now?
3) Where to next and how will get there?
This student possesses a growth mindset (embraces challenge, puts forth effort, learns from mistakes and accepts feedback. This student is self-efficacious, can self-regulate and self-advocate.
Here is a video which highlights the shift from student engagement to empowerment:
