College Countdown College Countdown

Tips and Resources for Preparing for College

Before submitting your college applications, you MUST apply for in-state tuition today using the Residency Determination Services (RDS) form. You will need to complete this with a parent/guardian.

  • The RDS is an online form students need to complete with a parent/guardian in order to qualify for in-state tuition. It is important to use a personal email address when filling out the form. After completing the form, the student will be given a Residency Number that they will need to input into their college applications.
  • If you have already filled out the RDS form and you received a notification that you did not qualify for in-state tuition and you believe that you should, there is an appeal process. Click here to learn more about the RDS and RDS appeal/reconsideration processes.

Paying for college can feel daunting- don't miss out on the opportunity to save thousands by filling out the FAFSA! FAFSA stands for "Free Application for Federal Student Aid, and the 2026-2027 FAFSA form will open on October 1st. The FAFSA is the only way to find out what federal/state grants and financial aid offers you are eligible for! All college-bound students are encouraged to apply.

NC College Connect opens on Tuesday, September 15th! This year, all seniors on track to graduate this year from a North Carolina public high school will begin receiving customized letters in the mail starting mid-September. Regardless of whether they receive a physical letter, eligible students can access their NC College Connect portal to claim their spot at at least one college. Students with under a 2.8 weighted GPA will receive an invitation to their local community college, and those with a 2.8 or higher will receive additional colleges where they have met the minimum GPA for direct admissions!

Visiting a college? Great idea! College visits are an excellent way to get the feel of a school environment. Grab a college visit waiver form in the front office and have your teachers/counselor sign it so that you can get that day waived. Students can have up to 3 days waived for college visits.

If you are requesting a letter of recommendation from a teacher/counselor, please make sure that you give them plenty of notice before your letter is due as well as providing your resume and any other helpful information to them.

Upcoming College-Related Events:

  • Senior Parent College Night 9/22- Student Services will be hosting our annual Senior Parent College Night on September 22nd at 6:00 pm in the auditorium. Senior Counselors and College for North Carolina representative will be there to share important information about the college application process and financial aid options and answer any questions you might have. You don't want to miss it!
  • Field Trip: We will be taking a group of Juniors and Seniors to the CACRAO College Fair at UNCA on September 16th. There will be more than 100 colleges represented from all over North Carolina and surrounding states. This is an amazing opportunity to talk with admissions reps and get information about their programs and scholarships. Pick up a permission slip in Student Services. We have limited availability so save your seat now!
  • October is Countdown to College Month! Next month, we will be hosting events and putting out lots of information about the college application process. Fill Out the FAFSA, Save Money- Form Opens on October 1st!

The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is the application for ALL need-based money for college. The form will go live on the Studentaid.gov website on October 1st! Completing the FAFSA is the only way that students can find out if they are eligible for grants, loans, and state/institutional funds. Most of our students here at Enka High School receive at least some money for college by completing the FAFSA. Many who are planning to attend community college such as AB Tech or Haywood Community College receive enough to pay for all expenses needed to attend, through the Next NC Scholarship (more info on this in the "Spotlight on Scholarships" section).

The FAFSA form applies for all sources of Federal and State financial aid, and also for student loans and work study. It is important to note that if your student is approved for a student loan, the FAFSA in NO WAY requires you to accept student loans or work study. Even if your student does not receive enough from the government to pay for everything, individual colleges have other sources of money that their staff will use to make the best offer of financial aid to your student that they can. It all starts with the FAFSA!

College for North Carolina has several helpful resources and webinars about the FAFSA/financial aid. They just added a step-by-step guide to this year's FAFSA. Here is the recorded webinar.

Upcoming Events:

Save the Date- BCS is holding a FAFSA Event on October 14th at the BCS Central Services office. More information to come! We will also be hosting FAFSA sessions next month where students and their parents/guardians can come in and get help with their FAFSA form. Stay tuned for more information!

Additional FAFSA Help in the Community: AB Tech takes appointments with families to help them fill out the form (you do not have to be planning on attending AB Tech to receive help). It's important to note that a parent/guardian MUST be present when filling out the form.

Next NC Scholarship:

  • The Next NC Scholarship is a financial aid program that helps most North Carolinians from households making $80,000 or less pursue higher education. Students attending a community college will receive at least $3,000 per year. Those attending a public university in North Carolina will get a minimum of $5,000 per year. The best part? It’s money that doesn’t have to be repaid. The money awarded through the Next NC Scholarship can be used to cover expenses at any of the 58 community colleges or 16 UNC System universities across the state. That funding goes beyond tuition to include things like fees, books, food, and housing.
  • Applying is simple. Just complete the FAFSA form. If you’re eligible, you’ll receive the Next NC Scholarship. There are no additional forms to fill out. Submit the FAFSA form by the priority dates to ensure you qualify for your maximum award — that’s June 1 for UNC System universities and August 15 for NC community colleges. After those dates, FAFSA forms are reviewed in the order received and funding will be awarded as available.
