Greetings!
As we conclude March, I would like to take a moment to honor Women's History Month. This month provides an invaluable opportunity to celebrate the contributions, achievements, and resilience of women throughout history. Recognizing the significant impact women have made in various fields, within our communities, at home, and across the globe inspires us all to continue advocating for equality and empowerment.
Additionally, as we wrap up the final week of Quarter 3, I want to express my sincere gratitude to our incredible families, dedicated teachers, supportive staff, and hardworking students. Your commitment and effort have made a remarkable difference this quarter. Letโs celebrate all the accomplishments weโve achieved together!
With spring break just around the corner, I encourage everyone to take this time to relax, recharge, and enjoy some well-deserved fun! Whether itโs spending time with loved ones, exploring new activities, or simply enjoying some downtime, make the most of this break. Letโs return rejuvenated and ready to embrace the exciting challenges of Quarter 4 together!

6th Grade Language and Literature
Why are we talking about โfishbowlsโ in our
Language and Literature classes?
Students in 6th grade Language and Literature are exploring our discussion skills. We are developing skills that will be used for 7th grade, 8th grade, and the rest of our academic careers! This unit is based on a discussion protocol called Shared Inquiry from the Great Books program.
We are learning how to understand and examine a text through questions and answers. We develop questions with the idea that some questions donโt have โrightโ answers, just answers you can support with evidence from the text. We work together to construct meaning and arrive at a better understanding of the text we are exploring.
Students follow a number of steps over several days:
We read the text first.
We come up with some ideas for good discussion questions.
We prepare by developing one idea and several pieces of evidence that support our idea.
We get into an outer circle and an inner circle (like a fishbowl!)
The inner circle focuses on exploring the text through the act of questioning and answering.
The outer circle remains silent. Students in the outer circle are observers watching and listening to the conversation of the inner circle.
The next day, we switch and the students in the inner circle go to the outer circle and vice versa.
The role of the teacher: the students lead the discussion and questioning. The teacherโs role is to ensure the discussion advances regardless of the particular direction the discussion takes.
After the discussions, we do different activities that use the new ideas we developed to show our new understanding!
7th Grade Language and Literature
7th Graders on Inspiring "March" Journey
In an exciting development for our middle school, the 7th grade class has participated in a transformative unit centered around John Lewis's acclaimed graphic novel trilogy "March." This engaging curriculum culminates in a powerful Social Justice speech project, promising to inspire and educate our young learners.
Diving into Civil Rights History
The "March" trilogy, a vivid autobiographical account of John Lewis's lifelong struggle for civil and human rights, will serve as the cornerstone of this unit. Students will have the unique opportunity to explore the Civil Rights Movement through Lewis's personal experiences, bringing history to life in a compelling and accessible format.
From Page to Podium
As they progress through the unit, students will develop critical thinking skills, analyze primary sources, and gain a deeper understanding of social movements. The culmination of their studies will be a Social Justice speech, where each student will:
Choose a social justice issue close to their heart
Conduct research on their chosen topic
Craft a persuasive speech that not only highlights the issue but also proposes solutions, and uses speech writing strategies
Mastering the Art of Rhetoric
In preparation for their speeches, students will learn and apply various speech strategies and rhetorical devices, including:
Ethos, pathos, and logos appeals
Repetition and parallelism
Metaphors and analogies
Rhetorical questions
These tools will empower our 7th graders to communicate their ideas effectively and passionately, skills that will serve them well beyond the classroom.
Fostering Future Leaders
This unit aims to do more than just enhance academic skills. By engaging with real-world issues and learning to advocate for change, our students will develop a deeper understanding of civic engagement and social responsibility.
We encourage all members of our school community to engage with our 7th graders about their projects. Your interest and support can further motivate these young minds as they tackle important social issues.
Stay tuned for updates on this exciting project, and don't miss the opportunity to hear our 7th graders deliver their speeches. Together, we're nurturing the next generation of informed, articulate, and socially conscious citizens.
6th Grade Science
Sixth grade has been โRockโn itโ for the last 4 weeks. We have studied the periodic table of elements which transitioned into understanding how minerals are formed. With that history in our back pocket, the students have adopted a pet -- no not a dog and not a cat -- something much more important to our earth-- yep a rock.
Each student has chosen a rock, personalized it and is now studying how it was formed. They will present their pet rock and all of their findings during the last week of the quarter.
After spring break we will be blasting off of the earth and into space with our Rockets, Engineering and Space unit. Be looking for a 6 week unit booklet with a rocket order form, permission slip and letter describing the unit plan. We will be looking for parent support in the classroom and on our May rocket launch field trip -- more detail will come in April.
High School Musical Jr. was AMAZING!
Bravo and thank you to everyone -- the cast, crew, directors, producers, volunteers, parents, administration, teachers, engineers, staff, fans, families, and community members!

8th Grade Model UN
Anthony 8th graders will soon be participating in a Model United Nations simulation in their World Studies class. The unit will begin April 7th with an exploration of the history, function, and structure of the United Nations. This will be followed by research about the global issue of refugees from the perspectives of the countries students will be representing at the school conference. Students will collaborate, negotiate, and create peaceful resolutions at the Conference on Friday April 25th.
There are two things that families can do to support the success of Model UN at Anthony. First, please sign up to be a volunteer at the conference; pencil April 25th on your calendar. There will be a volunteer sign-up with additional details shared in the future. Second, please assist students in meeting the Model UN dress code. Students should aim for business or business casual attire. For example, dress pants/business top/tie, skirt/business top, or dress. Model UN is a role play, and like any other play there is a costume!
We are excited to see what this year's 8th graders can do with their research and diplomatic skills. Any questions or concerns please contact Annie Ellingham or Toby Aickin.
