"Encourage one another and build each other up ..."
1 Thessalonians 5:11
We have been busy this week! Book Fair was a great success, and students were very happy to peruse and find fun books and pens. In Reading, we read a story about technology and the impact on future travel. Students read different perspectives, found main ideas, and the evidence that supported each idea. They then decided which perspective resonated with them the most, and used evidence from the text to support their thoughts.
In Math, we started our unit on multiplication, and the class is doing so well! As we move toward larger problems, math facts play a key role. While we don't monitor math facts with Otter Creek anymore, students are expected to know all multiplication facts, which will help with their larger numbers this year. I have several sets of multiplication flash cards, and am happy to loan them out. Please let me know if you would like to borrow a set.
In Science, we are learning about chemical reactions. Today, we created a chemical reaction by making slime from several different substances. Ask your student what some signs of chemical changes are! These units are lead in units for our UCSB Chemistry field trip in November. We are sure to talk about safety rules, and make sure we follow them, all in practice for our visit to a large lab.
This week, we also talked about our first book report of the year. These will be for the month of October, and due October 31. Students are welcome to bring them in earlier when they finish. Some time will be given in class for these projects, but they will likely have to work on them at home as well.
Blessing of the Animals
Our annual Blessing of the Animals will be held on Friday, October 3 right after morning assembly. Morning assembly will take place on the grass for that day. Students are welcome to bring pets from home to receive a blessing from Father in honor of St. Francis of Assisi, who loved all animals. Small, caged, and quiet pets are welcome to remain in the classroom for the day (ie: fish, hamster), but larger animals must go home after the blessing. Please keep pet temperament in mind when deciding whether to bring your pet.
SciTrek
Next week, we will also being our first SciTrek unit, with volunteers from UCSB coming to lead our class through a fully developed inquisition, following the full scientific method. Our first module will follow the question: What variables affect shadows?
