A Note from our Principals A Note from our Principals

Dear 279Online Families,

We are off to a great start this third trimester, and we appreciate all the hard work and dedication our students have shown! As you head into a well-deserved week of spring break, we hope you take time to relax and recharge. When we return, we will continue to show our DEN expectations: Demonstrate Appropriate Behavior, Engage in Education, and Navigate Your Environment. With the arrival of nicer weather, this is a great time to revisit your routines at home—making sure you have a plan for arriving to class on time, setting up a focused learning space, and participating on Wednesday's during DEN Time to stay on top of schoolwork while connecting with peers. Enjoy your break, and we look forward to seeing you back and ready to learn!

Microsoft Teams Update Microsoft Teams Update

As we continue to enhance our students' learning experiences, we are excited to announce that starting next school year, we will be transitioning from Google Meets to Microsoft Teams for our online classes. This change will provide our students with a new and improved virtual learning environment, designed to support their educational journey more effectively.

To ensure a smooth transition, some of our dedicated teachers will begin piloting Microsoft Teams this spring with select classes. This will allow them to familiarize themselves with the new platform and prepare for a seamless full transition in the fall. Teachers who are piloting will be reaching out to families of students who will experience Microsoft Teams yet this spring with more information.

We understand that changes can sometimes be challenging, but we are confident that this move will greatly benefit our students. Microsoft Teams offers a range of features that will enhance collaboration, communication, and overall learning experiences.

We appreciate your support and cooperation as we make this exciting change. If you have any questions or need assistance, please do not hesitate to reach out to us at online@district279.org or 763-391-8670. Together, we can ensure that our students continue to thrive in their educational endeavors.

Thank you for being an integral part of our school community.

279Online’s First Elementary Field Trip: A Hands-On Learning Adventure! 279Online’s First Elementary Field Trip: A Hands-On Learning Adventure!

On March 18, our K-5 scholars embarked on a fun learning adventure—our very first elementary field trip! 37 scholars traveled to the Works Museum in Bloomington, MN, where they explored the exciting world of science through hands-on activities. This field trip was funded through a District 279 Foundation grant.

The adventure began with a special send-off from Ollie the Otter, our school mascot, who greeted scholars and waved as scholars boarded the bus. For many, this was their first time riding a bus. The joy was evident as scholars exchanged high-fives, hugs, and smiles with their teachers, classmates, and other staff members.

At the Works Museum, scholars engaged in interactive learning focused on motion and sound. They built Newton’s Cradles and ear harps, discovering the power of perseverance and teamwork with encouragement from museum instructors. Through collaborative problem-solving, they constructed K’nex cars to race down a track and contributed to a Lego community art project. Scholars explored numerous museum exhibits where they demonstrated creativity and engineering skills.

Throughout the morning, our scholars tinkered, collaborated, and explored, embodying our DEN expectations while having fun. The trip was a fantastic opportunity to bring learning to life and strengthen the bonds within our 279Online community.

This program is a proactive and positive bullying prevention program that improves school climate and increases student engagement. Our goal is to create a culture of kindness in our school, community, and the world!

Through a variety of actions on a kindness checklist, scholars will focus on these key concepts:

  • Caring (including self-care)
  • Respect
  • Gratitude
  • Inclusiveness

These kindness concepts are internalized through action-based, hands-on experiences.

Over 20 million scholars, 41 thousand schools in over 110 countries have performed more than

1 billion acts of kindness!

Scholars will be getting more information on this in class soon.

  • K - 5th grade classes participated March 14th – 21st
  • 6th - 12th grade Advisory classes will participate April 14th – 18th

Ms. Hathcock's Music Scholars Create Ostinatos

Our music teacher, Ms. Hathcock shares that third graders wrapped up last Tri by learning about ostinatos—repeated rhythm patterns! They learned the song "Shiny Penny" and then created ostinatos to go along with the song. Scholars were split into two groups and given a sheet with each type of coin on it. They got to choose what pattern to put the coins in, creating their ostinato. Afterwards, they presented their patterns to the class and then put it to together with the song. The form of the song was to sing the verse, play Group 1's ostinato 3 times, sing again, play Group 2's ostinato 3 times, and sing one last time to end it. Ms. Hathcock says, "They loved to be able to work collaboratively to create their own music and then get to perform it together as a class! It is a joy to see their creativity bloom and a love for music shine in my classroom!"

Ms. Windfeldt Onboards Tri 3 Transfers in Skills for Success

Skills for Success is a class designed to support scholars who are brand new to our school. It is a space to experience a little bit of everything 279Online- the big systems like Schoology and Google Drive, the daily schedule and expectations, and commonly used learning tools. At the start of the Tri, we welcomed many new middle and high school students. We played games, did icebreakers, solved riddles, and took turns sharing. Scholars did an exceptional job working independently and in breakout rooms. This is a good batch of brand-new scholars; it was a joy to onboard them. Welcome to the Otter family! We are so glad you are here.

Directory and Photo Release Information Directory and Photo Release Information

In the back-to-school forms process, families have the ability to deny the release of all directory information (including a student’s image) or to specifically deny the release of a student’s image only. Families who wish to change their student's opt out preferences can do so at any time in ParentVUE.

What is the difference between denying a release of a student's photograph and denying a release of directory information?

  • If you deny the school district the ability to release your child’s photo only, the school district will not include a photo or a video/audio recording of your child in yearbooks, school/district websites, school/district social media pages or other school/district publications accessible outside of school.
  • If you deny a release of all of your student’s directory information (which includes the student’s photograph), the school district will not include your child’s name, image, voice, school of attendance, awards, participation in officially recognized activities/sports, or any other directory information in any school/district publication that is accessible outside of school.

More information about the Directory/Photo Release information can be found here: https://www.district279.org/info-center/media-inquiries/opt-outs
