Hi Cheetah families!

March is well under way in the Memorial School Library!

Literacy News

Memorial Students celebrated Read Across America last week with a number of exciting activities. We had many guest readers from the East Hampton community, had some fun dress up days and kicked off our March Madness tournament of books. Ask your reader about the books they are reading in school. Have them give you a summary or ask what they liked/disliked about the book. We would like to continue with this momentum for the remainder of the year and throughout the summer. You can help by getting in those 20 minutes of reading at home that are so important in order to maintain acquired skills.

Students in kindergarten continue to develop their literacy skills. They are turning their reading super powers up to “extra strength” in order to read more challenging books with accuracy, fluency and comprehension. These young authors are also writing “All About Books” to teach their audience about something special or interesting to them.

First grade students are busy in their non-fiction reading and writing units. They are learning all about the text features that help them navigate and comprehend non-fiction text. Here is an article on reading these texts with your learner as well as some questions to guide your discussions.

Nurses Notes

Dear parents/guardians,

Please bring in a change of clothes as well as socks and shoes for your child to keep at school. Also, snowpants and snowboots are needed in order for them to play out in the snow. The nurse's office has very limited supply of spare clothing to donate. We would also appreciate any gently used donations of boys size 8 and up sweatpants/joggers and girls size 8 and up leggings.

Thank you for your assistance.

East Hampton Schools Offer Preschool Programs

The East Hampton Public School System is seeking three and four year old residents interested in preschool programs for the 2023-2024 school year. We are excited to offer two preschool programs this year, the Integrated preschool half day program and full day Smart Start program.

Memorial Elementary School’s preschool Integration Program will be held three times a week for three year old students and four times a week for four year old students. Due to limited spaces, selection for peer models will be determined through a lottery process. If selected, peer models demonstrating age appropriate skills will be assigned by age to either a three day or four day a week schedule (2.5 hours per day). Children must be potty trained and turn 3 prior to September 1, 2023 to be eligible.

Memorial Elementary School’s Smart Start Program will be held 5 full days per week (8:50am-2:50pm), following the East Hampton Public School calendar. Priority will be given to 4 year old children that meet income guidelines or have other factors for consideration. Other applicants, regardless of economic or risk factors will then be selected.

Parents interested in proceeding through the selection process must pick up an application/information packet at either Memorial Elementary School or the East Hampton Public Library. The completed Parent Interview Form, Immunization Form and a Proof of Residency must be returned to Jodi Blyler at Memorial School office no later than March 17, 2023. Once all three forms are returned, parents will be contacted, no later than March 24th, to schedule a time to bring their child for the screening and lottery/selection process.
