All SaintsOutreach News

February 2025

When I moved to Puyallup in 2016, I learned about a ministry starting in the archdiocese for Catholic Relief Services ambassadors. I went to the orientation and was immediately won over by the stories shared and the people I met. (You may remember me selling fair trade goods at the Knight's breakfasts back before I was hired on as staff.) In 2021, CRS transitioned into a focus on advocacy. All Saints, along with Holy Disciples, and St Leo's formed a CRS Chapter to advocate for foreign assistance by writing emails and letters to the editor, making phone calls, and participating in twice-yearly virtual visits with congressional staff. Along the way I've been impressed with the CRS programs I've learned about that support mothers and children, small farmers, and those recovering from increasingly dire natural disasters due to climate change. I've also been inspired by the CRS support staff that work tirelessly to educate US Catholics and others of goodwill on the importance of humanitarian aid and development work for long-term sustainability. Therefore, the news of the past few weeks that USAID funds (of which CRS is one of the primary benefactors) were being stopped has been heartbreaking.

Advocacy and fundraising are now more essential than ever. I've included some resources in the Global Solidarity section below for how you can take action. As we enter into Lent, and assemble our CRS Rice Bowls, please pray for the people around the world who will not be receiving food, medicine, or seeds to plant this year's harvest due to the funding freeze. And consider calling your congressperson or giving a little more in your Rice Bowl this year to help.

PREPARES

Thanks to a grant from PREPARES, we are able to distribute diapers to families with little ones through our food bank. In January, 9 families received diapers and wipes.

EGG CARTONS

I'm sure you've noticed the price of eggs increasing! Our food bank is trying some new sources for eggs, but that requires us to repack them. Please keep donating your clean egg cartons! Thank you.

*These programs, along with our Parish Garden, receive CRS Rice Bowl grants each year. Rice Bowl grants come from the 25% of Rice Bowl donations that are returned to our archdiocese to support local programs that alleviate hunger.

Hunger Action Day

On Monday, February 24, I participated in Hunger Action Day in Olympia to advocate for anti-hunger and anti-poverty legislation. I was the sole representative from District 25. Would love to have more folks join me next year! Please contact Morningstar if interested in learning more about advocacy on the local or national level.

"Maybe because he was orphaned and had been treated shabbily by one of his brothers, Peter Damian was very good to the poor. It was the ordinary thing for him to have a poor person or two with him at table and he liked to minister personally to their needs."

Saint Peter Damian | Franciscan Media

If it hadn't been for an elder brother taking him under his wing, Saint Peter Damian may have taken a very different path in life. But with his brother's guidance, he matured into a holy man, monk, and bishop. A man of prayer and devotion, Peter Damian was also a spiritual writer.

Faith in Action

Members of All Saints and other CRS Chapters participated in congressional visits with the offices of Senator Murray, Senator Cantwell, and Representative Strickland earlier this month to discuss the impact the foreign aid freeze has had on our brothers and sisters around the world. CRS has had to halt life-saving programs that affect millions of people and lay off 1,200 of their staff around the world. If you want to give your input to congress, click here. Be sure to personalize the subject and message for greater impact.
