What We're Learning
Math
Students will build their understanding of numbers and number lines. We will plot 2-digit numbers on an open number line and explain why their locations make sense. Students will identify which multiple of 10 a given number is closest to and practice plotting 3-digit numbers on an open number line. We will also compare 3-digit numbers using number lines and place value, using the terms “equal to,” “less than,” and “greater than.” Students will use comparison symbols to compare 3-digit numbers.
Reading
Students will identify and explain an author’s purpose for writing a text, including whether the author is trying to answer a question, explain a process, or describe a topic. Students will also practice determining the meaning of unfamiliar words and phrases by using a variety of strategies and applying context clues. At the end of the week, students will use what they have learned throughout the unit to complete their unit assessment.
Weekly Spelling Pattern
We will have a SPELLING TEST THIS WEEK!
In phonics this week, students will practice reading and writing words that contain the digraphs sh, wh, th, and ch. They will learn to recognize the sounds these letter combinations make and apply their knowledge when reading and spelling words. We will practice using quotation marks to show direct quotations and dialogue and learn how to correctly use commas inside quotation marks. In phonics and word study, students will read and use words with inflectional endings, such as -s, -es, -ed, and -ing, and explore how these endings change the meaning or tense of words.
Writing
Students will revise and publish their personal narratives. They will use an editing checklist and work with a partner to make improvements to their writing. Students will publish the beginning, middle, and end of their narratives and add illustrations to enhance their stories. Students will celebrate their hard work by sharing their narratives with others and reading their stories aloud.
.
Social Studies
Students will explore how Americans use positive civic dispositions, such as cooperation, respect, responsibility, and fairness, to bring people together. Students will also use primary and secondary sources to research a national figure (Clara Barton, MLK, Jr., Jane Addams, Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, and Harriet Tubman). We will research how these people demonstrated these important civic qualities and learn how that person made a positive impact on others and their community.

Homework
Spelling
- Please note: This year, 2nd grade teachers will be sending home examples of words to practice, not a list to memorize. Interested in why we are making this shift?
- Click HERE to find out!
Math
- We will begin sending home weekly math review sheets beginning the week of Sept. 14th-18th. These do not have any bearing on the overall math grade, but will help your child review concepts so that they stay fresh in their minds.
Reading
- Reading every night is imperative to your child's success in 2nd grade. Your child should be reading for at least 20 minutes every night.
After School Art Enrichment
Attendance Information
Attendance Matters!
- Students will only be allowed 10 total absences. Greenville County states that students must be present 170 of 180 days. This can be combination of parent notes, or unexcused absences. A student will be considered TRUANT with 3 consecutive unexcused absences, or 5 total unexcused absences. Chronic absences and tardiness can affect the entire classroom, disrupting the flow of learning. Attending school REGULARLY and ON TIME creates a positive environment for everyone! If a student misses more than 10 days, all additional absences must be medical or principal approved to be classified as an excused absence. We are no longer able to accept text messages or class app messages. Attendance must be communicated through email to your child's teacher, email to Mrs. Rogers, or a physical note in your child's red folder.
Student/Parent Backpack
A backpack for parents account provides parents, guardians, or contacts with a central place to sign in to do the following:
- View their student's information including demographics, attendance, classes, grades, lunch balances, and test scores
- Apply or register their student to Special Focus schools and programs (Fine Arts Center, Career Centers, etc.)
- Receive alerts and notifications regarding their students
- View their student's school and contact information
- Manage parent and contact information for their students

Water Bottle Reminders
Please make sure your child brings a water bottle to school each day. With the warm temperatures, we want to make sure all of our little ones stay cool and hydrated throughout the day!
If possible, we prefer water bottles with a straw, as they are easier for students to use throughout the school day.
Please remember that students should have ONLY WATER in their water bottles. 💧
Thank you for helping us keep our students hydrated! 😊
Breakfast and Lunch Updates
Visitors at LUNCH
As we begin our school year, we ask that you wait to join your child for lunch until
after Labor Day so that we have time to put all of our routines/procedures in place. Students are not allowed to have 'friends' eat with them and their parent. ONLY parents/child are allowed to eat together during this visitation lunch time.
Breakfast and Lunch Menus
Woodland will be providing free breakfast and lunch to all students again this school year! Please see below for the breakfast and lunch menus for the month.
