March 2024

Upcoming Huddle Details: (Virtual Only)

Our March huddle will return to our book study of The Advice Trap with Michelle Harris from the Instructional Coaching Group (please see the details below, including the discussion questions).

As spring approaches, we are excited to visit your schools and share the news about our great summer PD offerings. Be on the lookout for more information regarding our OTREN/IMESD Summer Series coming soon!

SAVE THE DATE: Our year will wrap up with the Instructional Coaches Conference - May 21 & 22 in Pendleton, OR. We are once again collaborating with Michelle Harris to offer this professional learning opportunity and hope that you all can attend. New this year will be the ability to earn one EOU graduate credit (ED 510) for $100. One additional change this year is that participating coaches' districts will be responsible for travel and lodging costs, but OTREN will once again be sponsoring the costs of hosting Michelle and the meals for the conference. Reach out to our coaching team if you any questions or concerns regarding the conference.

We look forward to connecting with all of you next week!

Warmest Regards,

Ayla, Jennifer, and Beth

March 20: 10:00 am - 11:30 am

We are excited to dive into our next section of the book!

It's not to late to participate! We are happy for any coach or specialist to join the book study. You can also listen to the audiobook on the IMESD Sora app if you don't have a copy!

To Read before March 20th: Section 2 (pages 63-175)

Discussion Questions for Section 2:

  • Review the "Seven Essential Questions" - we will practice asking and answering these questions and then discuss with partners.
  • "Foggy-fiers" starting on page 88. Be prepared to share your experience with one or more of these. How can you avoid these in future coaching conversations?
  • How am I purposefully and intentionally practicing getting better at Taming My Advice Monster? What is working? What is not working? What are my next steps?
  • Staying out of the keyboard temptation: How can I have more in-person (or Zoom) conversations? How can I find time?
  • Is there any ONE thing I want to start doing today to avoid giving advice and allow people to do their own thinking? How can I make sure I try it? What’s getting in the way of doing that?

Virtual Meeting ONLY - we will return to a hybrid meeting in April.

Looking for great instructional videos?

We have heard from Katie Smith with Core Collaborative regarding coaching the formative assessment process. Her company has a great video library to share with teachers! These videos feature classrooms where teachers have implemented high impact strategies and shifted the paradigm from teaching to learning.

For a great learning opportunity when sharing these videos, you could try using the EAA microteaching protocol with your teachers. While watching the video look for and record Evidence of high impact strategies, Analysis the effectiveness, and determine Action steps for implementation in the classroom. Let us know if you decide to try it! We would love to hear your feedback on the process!
