A Message from Principal Ballard

🦉 Growing, Learning & SOARing!

Remember, we care about your child’s growth—both academically and in building strong, kind character. We want every student to learn, grow, make good choices, and become the best version of themselves.

📚 Vocabulary Matters!

At Winchester Avenue, we are helping students learn and use new words every day! Teachers are explicitly teaching vocabulary throughout lessons, and students are encouraged to use new words in their speaking, reading, and learning. Be sure to check in with your child about our Word of the Week posters throughout the building and our new Word Wall near the cafeteria! Ask your child about the new words they are learning.

🎉 First Nine Weeks Reward

We are excited to celebrate students who have met our behavior expectations during the first nine weeks! Students who have earned the reward will participate in a special celebration, bouncy house.

Students with 9 or more red owls and/or major or minor write-ups will not participate in the reward. Instead, they will participate in reteaching focused on the behaviors and expectations they need to practice and relearn.

We have high expectations because we know our Owls are capable of great things. Students will SOAR—or practice the expectations until they do! 🦉

Thank you for partnering with us as we help our students learn, grow, and SOAR!

Keep SOARing, Owls! 🦉💛

October is National Children's Health Month October is National Children's Health Month

This month is a time to focus on helping children stay healthy, safe, and happy. It reminds us that healthy children need nutritious food, physical activity, good sleep, emotional support, and safe environments where they can learn and grow.

At Winchester Ave, we are committed to helping every owl be healthy, safe, and ready to SOAR!

Attendance Incentives Attendance Incentives

Our Attendance Awards

The table above contains information concerning attendance incentives.

Every Month

Every month students miss one day or less families will be entered into a drawing for a $25 gas or food gift card. Students will attend the monthly Lego Party.

Every Nine Weeks

Every nine weeks the classroom with the BEST attendance will receive a class party. Families of students that miss three days or less during each nine weeks will be entered into a drawing for a family fun night basket.

Semester Goal

Students that have PERFECT attendance for the semester will be entered into a drawing for a new bike.

A Message for BCS Leadership About Attendance

We have noticed that some of our students have already missed school days this year. Currently, 20% of Berkeley County students have missed two or more days since the first day of school. Establishing strong attendance habits early is important, and we are committed to partnering with families to support every student’s success.

If you have received communication from your student’s school regarding attendance, we encourage you to connect with the identified staff member. Together, we can work to support your child and keep them on track for a successful year.

Did you know that you can write a note and provide documentation to explain your student’s absence? Providing a valid reason helps ensure accurate attendance records, supports student safety, and reinforces the importance of communication and responsibility—skills students will carry with them into the future.

When documentation is not received, the absence must be marked as unexcused. Students who accumulate more than ten unexcused absences may be considered truant under state law. Our goal is to help families stay informed and avoid this situation by working together proactively.

Thank you for your continued partnership in supporting student attendance. Your involvement makes a difference in helping every student stay engaged, connected, and successful.

Attendance Policy Reminders:

  • Parents are allowed to excuse ten days of absence due to illness during the school year (a doctor’s note is not required for these days).
  • Send a note within three days of absence. Please use the Absence Note link
  • Include the date(s) of absence and reason.
  • If your student suffers from a chronic medical condition, please contact the school nurse.
  • Absences related to trips/vacations are no longer excused by State Law.
