Dear Community,

Spring is officially in sight, and it’s hard to believe we’ve already reached the doorstep of our spring vacation! March is often a 'marathon' month, but seeing the energy our students and staff have poured into classroom breakthroughs and extracurricular achievements has been truly inspiring. This year, we’re especially excited to kick off our Profile of a Graduate initiative, a districtwide effort to define the key skills and mindsets we want every Muskrat to develop before graduation.

As we launch this work, our goal is to help students strengthen the skills that matter most to our community: Self-Management & Responsibility, Perseverance, Innovation, and Strategic Thinking. By helping our Muskrats learn to take responsibility, adapt to challenges, and think critically, we are ensuring they grow into confident, capable learners ready to thrive in school and beyond.

As the excitement for the upcoming break builds, I want to thank our entire district family for your hard work and your commitment to this vision. Whether you are planning a getaway or looking forward to a quiet week at home, I hope you take this time to recharge and reconnect. Let’s finish this week strong and carry that Muskrat pride into a safe, joyful, and well-deserved break!

Welcome Our New Food Service Director!

We are excited to introduce Jared Steinhauer, as the new Food Service Director for Chartwells at Algonac Community Schools! Jared joins our team with a passion for nutrition and a commitment to providing our students with fresh, delicious, and balanced meals every day. He is eager to get to know our school community and looks forward to enhancing the dining experience for all Muskrats. Please join us in giving Jared a warm welcome next time you see him in the cafeteria!

Highlights from K-2 fun!

It has been a season of discovery and celebration across our elementary classrooms! Our second graders recently dove into the world of physics during STEM class, exploring the concepts of density and displacement. Putting their knowledge to the test, students followed the formal engineering process to design and build "leprechaun boats" using a variety of materials. Working in teams, they brainstormed, built, and tested their vessels to see which designs could float the longest and carry the most "gold" without taking on water.

Meanwhile, our Kindergarten students have been busy making memories and hitting major milestones. From the excitement of the 100th Day of School to the snowy thrills of sledding during recess, there has been no shortage of smiles. The halls were also filled with wonder during our Mystery Reader visits and a whimsical celebration of literacy with a "Green Eggs and Ham" breakfast. It is wonderful to see our youngest learners growing both academically and socially every day!

Exploring the Outdoors: Upper Elementary Adventures

Our upper elementary students are diving deep into hands-on science and outdoor exploration this spring! On March 23rd, our 5th graders enjoyed a fascinating visit from the Friends of the St. Clair River, where they met a live lake sturgeon and learned about the importance of protecting this threatened species. This lesson kicks off a poster contest and a highly anticipated field trip on June 5th, where students will board the Huron Lady in Port Huron to watch the US Fish and Wildlife Service tag adult sturgeon. Back on land, 5th grade is also gearing up for their overnight adventure at Howell Nature Center from April 29th to May 1st.

We are also thrilled to announce several grant-funded initiatives that bring the classroom into nature:

Bioblitz on Harsens Island (May 8th): Thanks to an $1,800 grant from Women’s Life #812 "CATTAILS," we have purchased 30 vortex binoculars for our annual Bioblitz! In partnership with the Detroit Bird Alliance, DNR, and Harsens Island Waterfowl Hunters Association, students will study bird migration, test water quality, and even assemble wood duck boxes. On May 18th, select students will present their scientific findings at the county level.
Reel Skills for Real Life: A $750 MSGCU Teachers Cash Grant has provided 30 new rods and reels for grades 1–3, helping our younger students build patience and life skills through the joy of fishing.
Winter Wellness: An EEF Grant of $2,000 has allowed us to purchase snowshoes for grades 4–6, moving Physical Education outdoors to foster resilience and lifelong fitness habits.

Finally, stay tuned for our Annual Earth Day Art Show as students prepare to showcase their environmental creativity!

Red Carpet Results: The Algonac Oscars

Last week, the AHS Student Council brought some Hollywood glamour to our halls with the annual Algonac Oscars! This high-energy event was a resounding success for the community, raising over $400 and collecting several boxes of canned and non-perishable food to support the Clay Township Blessing Box.

The Oscars are a unique tradition where students nominate their peers across a variety of fun categories—from Best Dancer and Best Outdoor Sportsman to Biggest Flirt and the prestigious Muskrat of the Year. Nominees submitted creative videos showcasing their unique talents, which were screened during the ceremony before the winners were crowned based on student votes. It was a fantastic night of celebration, talent, and giving back!

Building Futures: The Conduit to the Trades Wall

We are proud to announce that Algonac Junior/Senior High School has been awarded a grant to fund the installation of the innovative Conduit to the Trades Wall! This dynamic resource is more than just a beautiful addition to our campus; it is a dedicated space designed to educate students on skilled trade opportunities, inspire them with information on apprenticeships and career pathways, and unify our community through educational innovation. We warmly invite all families and community members to stop by the high school commons area to see the installation firsthand and explore the vision behind this project. For more details, please visit Conduit to the Trades.

Take a Bow: Upcoming Performing Arts Showcases!

Get ready to be entertained as our talented students take the stage at the Algonquin Elementary Auditorium! We have an incredible lineup of performances coming your way this May. Kicking things off, our AJSHS Performing Arts II students will present the hit musical Mean Girls Jr. on May 1st at 7:00 PM and May 2nd at 1:00 PM. Later in the month, enjoy two different takes on the swamp with Shrek Jr.—performed by our Algonquin 6th Grade cast on May 14th at 7:00 PM, followed by the AJSHS Performing Arts I students on May 15th at 7:00 PM. Tickets are available at the door for $10 for adults and $5 for students. Come out and support our hardworking performers!

Instructional Services

As we enter the final stretch of the academic year, our classrooms are buzzing with focused activity. This month marks a critical period for Curriculum and Instruction as we launch our final round of intervention groups, providing targeted, small-group support to ensure every student meets their learning goals. Students are also diving into rigorous learning projects that challenge them to apply their knowledge in creative ways, all while preparing for upcoming state assessments. Behind the scenes, our leadership teams are hard at work within the MICIP (Michigan Integrated Continuous Improvement Process) framework. By analyzing our current data and refining our instructional strategies, we are ensuring that our district's growth stays aligned with the needs of our students, both for the remainder of this year and as we look toward the future.

Moving to the MAC!

Looking ahead to the future of our sports programs, Algonac Community Schools is pleased to share that we will be transitioning to the Macomb Area Conference (MAC) starting in the 2026-2027 academic year. This move is a strategic step designed to provide our student-athletes with consistent, high-quality competition and greater opportunities for growth. While our current schedules remain in place for now, we are already hard at work preparing for this transition. We look forward to seeing our community fill the stands as we embark on this new journey in the MAC!

While our classrooms are hubs of learning, we know that the success of our students is built on a foundation of incredible support. We want to take a moment to extend a heartfelt 'Thank You' to our dedicated support staff. From the clean and safe environments maintained by our custodians to the nutritious meals served by our food service team, and the personalized care provided by our paraprofessionals and office staff, you are the heart of Algonac Community Schools. Your hard work ensures our students have the stability and resources they need to thrive every single day. We are a stronger district because of your commitment.
