Mr.B's basketball unit has started, safe to say our students are enjoying it!
Dear Families,
Each year volunteers, organized by FOWE, provide the staff with some special holiday treats. This year is no exception, starting Thursday with delicious chili and cornbread, cookies and cheesecake. Today there are teas and sweets! We feel well taken care of. Thank you. Thank you.
Gifts for Giving: We’re looking forward to this traditional event on Monday. Each class has an opportunity to make gifts. There will be 10 different projects children will be able to make. The schedule is as follows:
8:30-9:30 - 4/5
9:45-10:45 - 2/3
10:45-12:15 - LUNCH BREAK
12:20-1:20 - K/1 with 4/5 buddies
1:20-1:50 - opportunity for everyone to finish gifts
Hats for lunch 12/23 - K-5 students and staff traditionally gather for lunch in the Common Room on the last day of school in the year to say farewell. This year there is a new twist - students have the option to wear a hat special to them during the meal. No pressure, just if they want to.
A clothing request: We very much appreciate that students are regularly bringing in their cold weather clothes! It’s made the transitioning to/from recess much more efficient.
Although we maintain the heat in the building at a comfortable temperature, some students are wearing their jackets throughout the day. Our request is for students to come in with a sweater or sweatshirt as an extra layer in case they feel chilly indoors.
Reminder about exchanging gifts among students: We ask that any gift exchanges among students not occur at school. Please find a way for that to happen at another time and place. Thanks.
Middlebury College J-term education studies majors: Four students will be in residence at WES throughout J-term as part of the methods course I teach, Elementary Literacy & Social Studies. This is the third year we have hosted a J-term class. It’s a great opportunity for the college students to immerse themselves in the life and work of a school and the WES students love having the connections with them.
Lunch help: We need lunch help next week on Tuesday. We have very few sign-ups for January. It would be great to have at least the first week back all set before we head off for vacation. If you can sign up for a meal or two over the month, it would be very much appreciated. Lunch calendar

From the School Nurse: Pertussis (Whooping Cough) Information
The VT Department of Health is reporting a significant rise in pertussis (whooping cough), a very contagious respiratory disease that often affects school-aged children. We are not aware of any cases in ACSD, and hope the information below will help prevent and treat any cases that occur.
Symptoms & Treatment: Early symptoms look like a common cold (runny nose, low fever, mild cough) and usually appear 5-10 days after exposure. Later Symptoms can include severe coughing fits with a “whoop”, vomiting during/after coughing fits, difficulty sleeping, struggling to breathe, and rib fractures. Early treatment is crucial to prevent severe symptoms and shorten illness. Students/staff diagnosed with pertussis must complete 5 full days of antibiotics before returning to school; without antibiotics, they must stay home for 21 days from the start of the cough.
Spread & Prevention: Pertussis spreads easily through respiratory droplets from coughs and sneezes. Help prevent illness by staying up to date on Tdap/DTap vaccines, washing hands, covering coughs, and keeping students home when sick. Good rest, nutrition, hydration, and time outdoors also support overall health.
For questions, contact your school nurse or healthcare provider, and visit ACSD’s illness guidance or www.healthvermont.gov/whoopingcough for more resources.
