Lakewood's Excellent Adventure
This year we will be embarking on our own Excellent Adventure. (Parents, think Bill and Ted and all the cheesy 80s references will start making sense.) We are going to travel back in time and collect historical people to learn about character traits to become the ultimate Lancers. Each month will have a challenge the students will get to unlock. They will earn Excellent Tickets towards prizes and incentives throughout the year. It will be....like totally excellent!
Principal's Message
Welcome back, Lancers!
As we begin this new school year, I’m excited to go on this Excellent Adventure with each of you. Expect to see a lot of 80s motifs (including some amazing AI Glamour Shots to keep the mood light), learn a little history, and grow into Excellent Lancers together.
Well, this is certainly not the newsletter I intended to send today! When I began putting it together, we were supposed to be wrapping up our second day of school and celebrating the start of a new year. Instead, our thoughts are with the many families in our district who have been impacted by this week’s flooding. If your family has been affected, please know that we are thinking of you, and I hope you will reach out if there is any way our school can support you. We are hopeful that we’ll be able to welcome our students back on Monday and finally begin our school year together. In the meantime, I’m going to go ahead and share all the news I had planned for you today!
Several reminders for this year:
· School begins at 7:25 am and ends at 2:25 pm. Doors open at 7:05 am--all students report to the gym.
· During the school day, if you need to pick up your child from the school office, please be prepared to show your ID.
· School fees for all students are $40, payable by end of first nine weeks. Checks can be made to Lakewood Local Schools or can be paid online at PayForIt.net.
Don't forget to be excellent to each other!
History Spotlight
Mahatma Gandhi (born October 2, 1869, Porbandar, India—died January 30, 1948, Delhi) was an Indian lawyer, politician, social activist, and writer who became the leader of the Indian Independence Movement against British rule. As such, he came to be considered “the father of the nation.” Gandhi is internationally esteemed for his doctrine of nonviolent protest (satyagraha) to achieve political and social progress. In the eyes of millions of his fellow Indians, Gandhi was the Mahatma (“Great Soul”). The adoration of the huge crowds that gathered to see him all along the route of his tours made them a severe ordeal; he could hardly work during the day or rest at night. “The woes of the Mahatmas,” he wrote, “are known only to the Mahatmas.” His fame spread worldwide during his lifetime and only increased after his death. The name Mahatma Gandhi is now one of the most universally recognized on earth.

Lancer PRIDE Partners
As part of Lakewood Middle School’s commitment to fostering a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment, Lancer PRIDE Partners are parent volunteers who serve as positive adult presences in our hallways and cafeteria during key times of the school day. After we started the program last year, several parents requested to volunteer for Homework Help at the end of the school day and we added in that component as well. This program supports our anti-bullying efforts by promoting kindness, awareness, and accountability.
Primary Duties:
Supervise common areas such as hallways and the cafeteria during lunch and passing periods.
Assist with homework help during WIN period.
Model positive behavior and encourage respectful interactions among students.
Support staff by being an extra set of eyes and ears — not disciplinarians, but allies.
Intervene appropriately if you witness unkind or unsafe behavior, and report concerns to school staff immediately.
Build connections with students by being approachable, encouraging, and supportive.
Volunteer Expectations:
Always wear your volunteer t-shirt.
Do not allow anyone into the building. Guests should check in through the office.
Maintain a calm, friendly, and respectful tone with all students and staff.
Do not visit classrooms without an administrator.
Keep confidentiality — what you observe should only be shared when appropriate.
Remember, your presence matters! Smile, say hello, and let students know you're there to support a safe and welcoming school community.
All parent volunteers must pass a background check (schedule with district office) and attend a training meeting in August.
If you are interested in volunteering, please email Jessica Corum, LMS Principal, at jcorum@lakewoodlocal.k12.oh.us. Training sessions will be held September 16th at 7 pm. Information will be sent directly to those who sign up.
Homework Expectations--General Guidelines for Parents
If students use class time wisely, they can expect one hour or less of homework per night.
Homework is aligned to learning standards and should provide meaningful practice. Please remember that absences or days of being off task can increase the amount of homework.
