QUOTE FOR THE PRINCIPAL'S JOURNEY

“Effective [teaching] practices are especially beneficial to students who walk into school with any kind of disadvantages, and these same students are disproportionately harmed by mediocre and ineffective practices…”. Kim Marshall

This week's quote was taken from Marshall Memo #775. We have included the entire article below written by Kim Marshall. Many of you will be wrapping up evaluations shortly. As you reflect on this year's process and think about adjustments for next, consider what Kim says in his article.

Rethinking the way we coach, evaluate, and appreciate teachers

Rethinking the way we coach, evaluate, and appreciate teachers

When I visit classrooms with the principals I coach in urban, suburban, and private schools, it’s obvious how hard most teachers are working, how much care they put into setting up their classrooms, and how much gumption it takes to work with young people six hours a day. I see lots of effective teaching—practices that one might rate as level 3 or 4 on a four-point rating scale—and very little that’s horrible, or level 1. But I do see a fair amount of mediocre, level 2 practices—for example, teachers giving out low-rigor, fill-in-the-blanks worksheets, calling only on students who raise their hands, or failing to answer kids’ unspoken question, “Why are we learning this?”

Advocating for Principals...MoASSP Visits State Capitol. Local Legislator paid MoASSP a visit today.

This past week, MoASSP Executive Director, Clark Mershon, and MoASSP Program Director spent time in the halls of the Missouri State Capitol visiting with legislators. Thanks to Representative Chuck Basye for dropping by the MoASSP office on Friday. As we continue to monitor the various bills impacting education in Jefferson City, MoASSP will continue to develop authentic relationships with members in both houses. We also need EVERY principal to become an "Advocate". With 1,350 MoASSP active and retired members, our "principal voice" can have a dramatic impact in Jefferson City. It's simple and easy. Click here to become an "Advocate".

Longtime Career Educator, Richard Phillips Visits MoASSP

We were pleased to have Richard Phillips drop by our office a couple of weeks ago. Richard was in education for more than 50 years as a teacher and school administrator. He also worked at DESE for many years. Richard was awarded the prestigious Pioneer in Education Award from DESE a few years ago. Richard's devotion to education is still front and center. He and others are working on reconnecting retired administrators back to their Associations. We certainly will partner with Richard and others to reconnect our former colleagues. As longtime principal and MoASSP Board Member and Past President, Jim Head, said, "There is a wealth of untapped knowledge within the retired ranks."

MoASSP Show Me Tour Visits Van Horn & Truman High Schools

In next week's Messenger, we will be highlighting Van Horn and Truman High Schools in the Independence School District. Pictured below is Van Horn Principal, Justin Woods, and his Administrative Team. And, Truman Principal, Ronda Scott, and members of her Administrative Team. MoASSP appreciates their support of our Association. Both teams have 100% membership in MoASSP and GKC.

MoASSP & MSCA Co-Sponsor Suicide Prevention Workshop

MoASSP Program Director, Doug Mirts and MSCA Director of Advocacy, Dr. Shari Sevier, provided a Suicide Prevention Workshop in Webb City this past week. Thirty-two attendees benefited from the information presented. This was an opportune time for teams to update and refine their building-level suicide prevention action plan. Thanks again to Dr. Sevier and everyone at MSCA. We value the partnership we have with Missouri School Counselors and Missouri School Psychologists.
