From Mr. Mullins From Mr. Mullins

PTA is wrapping up SBDM elections for a parent representative and a minority parent representative. Ballots are located in the school office. Parents may vote until end of business day Monday, September 18th.

What does it mean to be a Title 1 school? A Title 1 school receives additional funding from the federal government to support learning. These funds are determined by the percentage of free or reduced students who attend the school.

How are schools allowed to use their Title 1 money?

Title 1 funds can only be used for specific things as mandated by law. Schools are allowed to supplement their learning programs, but they cannot purchase new curriculum. LJES chooses to spend the majority of our Title 1 funds on staffing to provide students greater access to adults in order to receive the individualized help they need. Through Title 1, we are able to have a certified reading interventionist who works with students who are the furthest below grade level in reading. We also staff 2 assistant positions who work with students in small groups throughout the day. This year, the final part of our funding has been earmarked to purchase books for classrooms use as well as books to give to students.

Mark your calendar for our Title 1 Family Night on Thursday, September 28th from 5:30-7pm. The Family Resource Center is providing food for the evening and our classroom teachers will work with parents to explore iReady reports for your child to determine next steps to improve in the area of reading. We will also have stations set up to explore activities you and your child can do at home to strengthen their reading skills.
Staff love to hear positive feedback as much as our students enjoy getting feedback. Want to celebrate a teacher or staff member for going above and beyond or for being helpful? Click the link below to send a shout out to Mr. Mullins that he can share with that staff member to celebrate them!

Best in Class Award

Our school is participating in a creative fundraiser with Art to Remember that allows you to purchase keepsake products customized with your child’s art. Right now, students are busy creating colorful, fun artwork, and soon you will receive a personalized order form. Be on the lookout for more information!

The Graduate Profile is so important that even our kindergartners are learning to use the names of the competencies! Ms. Boone's kindergarten class practiced being Effective Communicators as they learned how to correctly form the letter 'o'. Students chose the letter they felt was their best and then talked to their table mates about why that was the best 'o' on their board. Some students talked about how it went from the top line all the way to the bottom line while others talked about how it was shaped or how the ends met. Each had their own answer, and each was able to support their thinking.
