Canaan Middle School Update December 1st, 2023

Principal Corner

Dear Canaan Middle School Families,

We hope everyone had a fantastic Thanksgiving break and is ready for the final stretch of the 2nd nine weeks. As we approach the end of the semester, we encourage our students to give their best effort, and our teachers and staff are here to provide any extra help they may need.

Winter has arrived, and the weather certainly reflects the season. With the colder weather, we will still have outdoor recess with the exception of very cold days. It's essential for students to come prepared for the chilly conditions. Please ensure your child is dressed warmly with appropriate winter attire to stay comfortable during outdoor recess.

Looking ahead to December, we have some exciting end-of-semester activities planned. On December 20th, we'll be hosting team-building activities with special treats and surprises for our students. It's sure to be a fun and memorable day as we celebrate the achievements and hard work of our students throughout the semester.

Thank you for your continued support of Canaan Middle School. Let's work together to make the rest of the semester a success!

Warm regards,

Mr. Walter, Principal

5th Grade Update

After weeks of working with fraction concepts, we are moving into Unit 3 which focuses on Decimals. (Don't worry, we will return to fractions later in the year!) Decimals are a nice break for students as they tend to be "easier" since they relate so nicely with whole numbers. For the time being, we are focusing on decimal place value, comparing decimal numbers, and eventually adding/subtracting decimals. In the end, we will wrap up Unit 3 with more practice with long division.

6th Grade Update

This week 7 out of 8 sixth grade science classes were able to go over to the high school to experience the Think Big space! Students enjoyed a variety of stations including a digital Breakout room, Lego ratios, z-Space exploration with 3d images, creating "mini-me" versions of themselves scaled down on tinkercad to later be possibly printed to make little physical figures, as well as a quick experiment with water, rubbing alcohol and food coloring. Mrs. G's B-day group will be rescheduled and announced when the date is determined.

Counselor's Corner - Mrs. Hein

Canaan students are learning about the importance of focusing on the positives in their lives and the many benefits of expressing gratitude:

  • Increases happiness, social connection, optimism, and productivity

  • Decreases anxiety, depression, and stress

  • Helps to brighten another person’s day

Students put their feelings of gratitude into action by decorating and writing a thank you note for someone special.
