September 9, 2026 - NEWSLETTER
Hello Westwood Schools families,
Thursday, September 17 is picture day for students. Order pictures directly from Lifetouch using picture day ID: EVT8WGN44.
Fall brings football season and many sporting events for the community to cheer on the Panthers. All students, kids who are not in high school, must be accompanied by a supervising adult.
- Ticket prices for Students are $6 per student and are digital only. Browse and purchase tickets.
- All school rules are extended to our high school events, for example, running around, throwing objects, using profanity, and physical contact with others will not be permitted. Violators of school rules will have their supervising adult contacted and be asked to leave the event.
- Backpacks, bags, skateboards, balls, etc. are not permitted.
- Entrance gates do not open until 45 minutes prior to the start of the contest.
Grades 5 and 6 students are starting the year in morning meetings discussing CARES. CARES stands for:
- C – Cooperation
- A – Assertion
- R – Responsibility
- E – Empathy
- S – Self Control
These skills are aligned to our career and life competencies and form the foundation for how we treat one another at school with kindness and respect. When students are using all five CARES attributes, classroom community becomes stronger and leads to a positive learning environment for each student and others. This is one way we’re laying a foundation for a strong year of learning together.
Have a great week,
Tom Larson

Grades 5-12 Assessments
During the first months of school, all students participate in universal screening assessments. These assessments in reading and math (e.g., MAP Growth) give teachers valuable information to support each student's next steps in learning. Find more information on our website about Assessments.

Hopes & Dreams for the Future!
Students in Ketz’s class spent time thinking about their hopes and dreams for the future. Feranmi chose to show his ideas in the way he learns best—through pictures and creativity! He created an animal clinic because he hopes to become a veterinarian when he grows up. We love seeing our students dream big and express their goals in ways that are meaningful to them!
Teamwork in Action: Save Sam!
Students in Ms. Golanowski’s homeroom kicked off the year with several fun team-building activities. One class favorite was “Save Sam!”—a mission that challenged students to work in pairs using only the tools provided. The activity brought lots of laughs while giving students opportunities to collaborate, communicate, and problem-solve together. What a fun way to build classroom community!
Book Speed Dating in 8C!
Students in team 8C Language Arts took part in a fun book speed dating activity to help choose their Trimester 1 choice novels. Students explored 10 different genres, previewed a variety of books, and recorded their thoughts about the titles that caught their interest. They’ll use their selected novel for a project throughout the trimester. What a fun way to discover a new book and build excitement for reading!

Keeping Our Schools Safe, Together
Every family wants their child’s school to be a safe, welcoming place to learn. Keeping students and staff safe is a shared responsibility across Spring Lake Park Schools — one that includes prevention, preparation, strong partnerships and knowing how to respond if something unexpected happens.
At the beginning of a new school year, we want to share how we work every day to keep our schools safe. Our students, staff and families are a part of that effort.
Our approach to safety and security has many layers. We work to prevent problems, protect our schools, practice how we will respond and learn from what happens so we can continue to improve. Read about our approach to safety and security.
Discovery Days (ages 3-5 child care) Registration is Open!
There are still spots open for Discovery Days, our award-winning child care and kindergarten preparation program for children ages 3-5.
