Hello Sycamore Springs Middle School Families,

Happy Sunday! I hope you are enjoying your weekend. We have a busy week this week with Track Parent Meetings starting, Tiger Leaders inviting everyone to join them in our annual Kindness Week Challenge, and counselors continuing to visit with classes regarding Choice Sheets for next year.

As always, if you need anything or have any questions, please contact your student's teacher, counselor, or administrator.

Go Tigers!

Sincerely,

Kelly Miller

Principal

1. Parent Pick-up/Drop-Off Reminders - please remember that we have two dedicated pick-up and drop-off zones. One in the Blue Lot (back of the school by the cafeteria and gyms) and the Yellow Lot (on the southside of campus near the elementary side). The Maroon Lot (main lot) is NOT a pick-up/drop-off zone. The Maroon Lot (main lot) is for BUSES ONLY and parents that need to come into the building. If you must use that lot, parent need to park and wait for their student under the awning. Parents must walk their student to their car. NO CARS should pass loading/unloading buses at any time!

For more detailed information regarding our traffic pattern, parking lots, and bike-rider routes, click HERE.

2. No Tiger Win this Tuesday! Just a heads up that all students will go directly to their 6th period class after 5th period instead of Tiger Win on Tuesday. Students can still use that time to make up work/get caught up. Our 8th grade students will have an opportunity to visit with the HS CTE programs to learn more about all the CTE classes at HS.

3. For 8th Grade Families - DSHS will be hosting several events catering to rising freshmen and their families.

  • January 28: CTE programs of study exhibits during 6th period, led by DSHS students
  • January 29 - 5:30 pm -7:30pm: Career Technology Education (CTE) Showcase at DSHS - this event allows students to see their CTE options and meet the teachers and students in the program
***For more details and a full list of events, please check out the Rising Freshman Grade Newsletter. You may want to bookmark this link for future reference as updates will be made as needed.

4. Morning Drop-off Change for Friday, Jan. 31 - This Friday SSE will be taking their school-wide drone photo on Friday morning. They will be blocking off the SSE drive next to their playground from 7:50am - 8:15am. If you drop off your student in the Yellow Lot (SSE side) in the mornings, you may want to switch to the Blue Lot (back of SSMS by cafeteria and gyms). Click HERE to an image of where they are blocking the road. The two red lines on the picture are where they will be stopping traffic.

5. This week is Kindness Week! Please join our Tiger Leaders in our yearly Kindness Week Challenge.

  • Monday - Compliment your A-day teachers
  • Tuesday - Compliment your B-day teachers
  • Wednesday - Tell the cafeteria employees THANK YOU
  • Thursday - Hold the door open for 5 people

We hope you all had a great week! We had such a great turnout for the Electives Showcase! We enjoyed talking with parents and students! There was definitely excitement in the halls!

On Jan 30 & 31, 7th Graders will receive a Mental Health lesson from Cally Conklin, with Safe Schools, in their health class. Course selection visits are underway and the students are excited about picking their classes for next year!

On February 12 & 13, 7th-grade students, in their science class, will have the opportunity to participate in an important educational lesson (presented by the counselors), focused on the prevention of child abuse, family violence, dating violence, and human trafficking, as required by Texas Senate Bill 9 (SB9). The curriculum has been carefully selected and approved by the DSISD administration, the Board of Trustees, and the Student Health Advisory Committee (SHAC) to ensure that it is developmentally appropriate for our sixth graders. Still, these are opt-in lessons and parents must opt their students into the lessons in order for their child to participate. The lesson is called Paint Them Healthy and is about 45 minutes long and includes a video component and guided discussions to reinforce the material.

The "Play it Safe" program offers trailers of the video lessons that parents or guardians can watch to get an idea of the content that will be presented to their children. If you'd like more information on what the curriculum specifically covers or how the lessons are structured, please contact your campus school counselor. We are hosting a parent presentation session for parents to preview the Paint Them Healthy curriculum prior to the lesson being taught. This meeting will be held on February 3, from 9:00a.m.-10:00 a.m. in the Pecan Room at SSMS.

You may review more detailed information about our Senate Bill 9 Play it Safe Curriculum on the District website by clicking this link.

7th Grade parents will receive an email from Mrs. Miller, on January 28 with this information as well. You will also receive an email from Actionaly on January 29. The Actionaly email will contain the consent form. Please complete the opt-in form from Actionaly by February 10, 2025. If we do not receive your form submission by this date, your student will be opted out. Remember, you must Opt in your student to participate in this lesson.
