As we gear up for the final stretch of the year, a reminder that CAASPP testing is now underway:
- 4th graders are beginning this week
- 3rd graders are moving onto Math after completing their ELA exams

Attendance is especially important during these testing windows. Please ensure your child gets plenty of rest, eats a healthy breakfast, and comes to school feeling calm and confident. We believe in them and know they will shine.
If you have an incoming student for the 2026–27 school year, be sure their enrollment is complete to secure their spot. For families outside of SMMUSD, the Interdistrict Permit window opens May 15. Help us spread the word—Webster is a wonderful place to grow and learn, and we’d love to welcome more families into our community.
As we head into Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week, I want to take a moment to share how deeply our staff is valued, admired, and loved 💛 This year’s theme is “Around the World”—because after exploring near and far, it’s clear: there’s no one like the teachers and staff at Webster. Please join me in showering the team that shows up for our students every single day. They deserve it all and more!
💐 Finally, to all the incredible Webster moms—I hope your Mother’s Day is absolutely perfect and that you are pampered just as you wish. You deserve to be celebrated always 💝

🤔 Pod Power Problems!
🏫 Principals for the Day: Riley and Reagan
This week, we had double the leadership and double the fun as we welcomed our Principals for the Day — Riley and Reagan Morrison! These dynamic sisters brought joy, confidence, and true Whale spirit to campus as they stepped into the role with grace, humor, and heart. From the moment the day began, Riley and Reagan set the tone by welcoming students at the gate with smiles and warm greetings. With radios in hand, they were naturals — echoing “Copy that!” like seasoned pros.
They took their recess duties seriously, making sure students lined up properly, helping a younger soccer player feel included, and even extending recess by five minutes — a crowd-pleasing decision! They also sent a student to the health office with care and compassion. When asked for feedback by our health staff, they gave the ultimate seal of approval: “Everything in here is perfect.”
In the office, they got a real taste of principal life by reviewing invoices. It may not have been their favorite part — they were quick to call out “Save us!” to staff walking by — but they learned an important truth: it’s not all fun and games in leadership. They navigated morning announcements with poise, selecting students to lead the school in the Pledge of Allegiance, sharing important reminders, and picking music for our beloved 30-second dance party.
Later, they visited TK and read Pigs Make Me Sneeze! with fantastic expression and energy, and capped the day off with Irv’s burgers and a dance party on the lawn that sparked a full-on conga line.
Riley and Reagan were naturals in their roles—compassionate, confident, and filled with light-hearted joy. They spread smiles wherever they went and showed what it means to lead with heart. We are so proud of them! 🐳💙
🚀 AstroCamp Highlights: Out of This World!
Our 4th graders returned from AstroCamp bursting with excitement, new knowledge, and unforgettable memories. This once-in-a-lifetime learning adventure in Idyllwild-Pine combined hands-on science, outdoor challenge, and deep personal growth—and we couldn’t be prouder of our students!
🎉 HUGE Thanks to Our AstroCamp A-Team
A heartfelt thank you to parent chaperones Jessica Tello, Saona Jackson, Phil Buckman, and Lincoln Hanks for keeping our kids safe and supported every step of the way. We're also incredibly grateful to Ms. London and Mrs. Morris for being outstanding role models and partners in creating such a meaningful experience for our students.
🧪 STEM in Action
From the moment we arrived, our students dove into immersive science sessions:
- Lights & Lasers: Students learned how light bends and travels, observed glowing gases, and even wore upside-down glasses for a hilarious brain challenge.
- Atmosphere & Gases: Dry ice, liquid nitrogen, and exploding balloons made for unforgettable experiments—including tasting frozen chips!
- Electricity & Magnetism: With Van de Graaff generators, Tesla coils, and hands-on static fun, students connected classroom concepts to the real world.
- Rocket Launching: A clear favorite—students designed, built, and launched their own rockets with custom fins and nose cones!
🧗 Pushing Limits
Adventure met courage as students:
- Soared across the meadow on a 700-foot zip line—in the rain! (Bonus points for bravery during mid-air “wedgie town” rescues.)
- Scaled a rock wall during the Expedition Valles Marineris Mars simulation.
- Navigated “Long Division,” an indoor maze in total darkness that tested teamwork and resilience.
- Flew through the trees on the SkyCoaster, cheering one another on every step of the way.
🌟 Beyond the Activities
From Gaga ball and scavenger hunts to the spirited Astro Olympics, students pushed themselves, encouraged one another, and found joy in every challenge. We also celebrated some special birthdays—complete with songs, smiles, and unforgettable moments that added extra magic to the trip.
👨🚀 Our Incredible Counselors
A special shout-out to Franky and Scout—our birthday-twin counselors—whose energy, authenticity, and care made a lasting impact. They created a space where every student felt seen, supported, and excited to learn. Their presence truly made a difference.
As students waved goodbye to AstroCamp, they carried home more than just souvenirs—they brought back confidence, curiosity, and a stronger sense of themselves. Thank you, families, for sharing your amazing kids with us. We’re still beaming from this unforgettable journey!
🎉 Websterpalooza: A Celebration to Remember!
What an unforgettable afternoon! From the first strum of live music to the last spin of the RC track, Websterpalooza delivered nonstop fun, big energy, and pure community joy.
Our campus transformed into a festival with something for everyone:
🎶 Live music all day—including crowd-favorite sets by dad DJs Eddie Makabi, Gus Peterson, and Joel Dunn.
🕺 Epic dance competitions and bold festival fashion, with prizes for the most creative looks—think disco balls, cool shades, and fearless flair!
🍔 Delicious eats kept us fueled, but cotton candy clearly stole the show as the ultimate fan favorite.
🎨 Students flocked to the face painting station and created masterpieces at the Camp Wildcraft arts & crafts booth.
🎈 Balloon art brought smiles from every corner, while patch sewing, DIY beaded fringe shirts, and our RC track offered thrills for all ages.
💥 A huge shout-out to our incredible organizers, Lauren Ifft and Erin Fotos, for pouring their hearts into making this event unforgettable. And to our dad DJs—Eddie, Gus, and Joel—for keeping the vibe alive and the dance floor moving!
Thank you for bringing your sparkle and helping make Websterpalooza such a meaningful celebration of togetherness. We can’t wait to do it all again next year! 💫
🌿 Community Gardening Day Success! 🍅
Webster’s garden came alive with color, care, and community spirit during our Community Gardening Day—a joyful afternoon of hands-on learning and eco-friendly fun! Hosted by the Webster PTA and Home Grown Gardens LA, families had the chance to dig in, get their hands dirty, and experience firsthand what our students are learning and growing. Huge thanks to Justine Larsen, our incredible gardening teacher, and always-smiling valet dad Kyle Mlodzik for organizing such a meaningful and fun-filled event.
Together, we:
🍌 Planted a banana tree and fresh strawberries
🌿 Trimmed our ever-thriving rosemary
🐞 Released ladybugs into the garden
✏️ Labeled plants with care and creativity
🌱 Tackled weeding, mulching, and planter box repair
🍅 Sent everyone home with a tomato seedling to nurture and a bundle of rosemary to enjoy!
It was a beautiful celebration of sustainability, student learning, and the deep roots of our Webster community.

✅ School Site Council Approves 2026–2027 SPSA
This week, our School Site Council (SSC) officially approved Webster’s Single Plan for Student Achievement (SPSA) for the 2026–2027 school year. This plan outlines our key priorities to support academic growth, equity, student well-being, and a positive school climate for every student. We want to extend a heartfelt thank you to all of our SSC members for their time, insight, collaboration, and partnership throughout the year. Your work ensures we continue to make thoughtful, data-informed, and student-centered decisions for our school community.
🔎 The 2026–2027 SPSA includes three focus areas:
- Academic Achievement: Increase student proficiency in ELA, Math, and Science through new curriculum adoption, academic interventions, and expanded project-based learning.
- Equity and Student Support: Accelerate progress for Multilingual Learners and strengthen targeted supports to close opportunity gaps.
- School Climate and Engagement: Foster student connectedness, boost engagement, and reduce chronic absenteeism through SEL, outdoor learning, and leadership opportunities.
Principal Diana and Instructional Coach Maribeth Majewski will present the plan to the SMMUSD Board of Education on May 13.
🎉 Webster Playground Project!
With incredible support from SMMUSD, our Webster PTA (led by Lauren Franks Ifft) have spent months working with designers and contractors to propose an inspiring, modern play structure to replace our aging 20-year-old equipment. The new design prioritizes safety, accessibility, and active play—giving our students a space that fosters physical development, creativity, and social connection.
The District, in collaboration with Principal Diana, has been advancing plans for the replacement of the current playground equipment and surfacing. The proposal includes ADA upgrades as required by the Division of the State Architect (DSA). Here’s what’s coming up:
- At the May 7, 2026 Board Meeting, the Board will be asked to approve the agreement with Huckabee for design and engineering services.
- At the May 19, 2026 Board Meeting, the Board will vote on the purchase of new equipment from Dave Bang Associates, Inc. for an amount not to exceed $157,268.10, using the CMAS contract—saving time and cost by avoiding contractor markups.
The demolition, site preparation, equipment installation, and new play surface will be bid through a separate process while we seek DSA approval. Construction is expected to begin August 2026, with completion anticipated by September 30, 2026, followed by a brief closeout period. Final approval from DSA is anticipated in late July or early August.
Below are a few renderings of the new structure—thank you to everyone working hard to bring this dream to life!

📚 New Math Curriculum Adoption UPDATE
At the April 23 Board of Education meeting, SMMUSD’s Educational Services team, alongside teachers and students, presented the recommendation for new math curricula to be implemented districtwide beginning in the 2026–2027 school year.
This recommendation is the result of an extensive pilot process led by a dedicated committee of math teachers representing every school site and grade level. Using tools from the California Department of Education and the updated 2023 California Mathematics Framework, the committee carefully evaluated state-approved curricula for alignment with standards, access and equity, organization, and teacher support.
🧮 Recommended Curriculum:
- K–8 & Algebra I/II, Geometry: enVision, Savvas (2026)
- Pre-Calculus: Precalculus: Mathematics for Calculus, 8E, Cengage (2023)
- AP Calculus: Calculus for AP: A Complete Course, 1E, Cengage (2019)
- AP Statistics: Math Medic AP Statistics (2026)
The adoption ensures continued opportunities for advanced coursework while supporting deeper student understanding. If approved at the May 7 Board of Education meeting, the new curriculum will roll out in Fall 2026 with comprehensive teacher training and ongoing coaching.
📌 Community members may preview materials at the District Office and submit feedback via the Let’s Talk button on the SMMUSD website.
📺 Watch the full presentation HERE.
💻 Instructional Technology & Google Services Update
SMMUSD wants to share some clarity around Chromebook and digital tool use at Webster and across the district. Technology is never a replacement for great teaching—our educators remain at the heart of every lesson. Digital platforms like YouTube (in Education Restricted Mode), Google Translate, and Maps are thoughtfully integrated to support learning, foster creativity, and prepare students for a tech-driven future.
All students are automatically opted OUT of YouTube and other “Additional Google Services.”
✅ To give permission, log in to the Aeries Parent Portal, go to Student Info > Data Confirmation > Authorizations, and update your selection under “Additional Google Services.”
If permission is not granted, your student will still have access to core tools such as Google Classroom, Docs, Drive, and Gmail, but additional services will be disabled.
The most commonly used “Additional Services” include:
-
YouTube (Education Restricted Mode) – Students can view only age-appropriate educational videos.
-
Google Maps / Earth – Used in geography, social studies, and science.
-
Google Translate / Arts & Culture / Photos – Support for language development, cultural exploration, and multimedia projects.
🔐 Reminder: All student accounts are protected through ContentKeeper, a robust content filter used by SMMUSD to ensure students can access only safe, age-appropriate content while online.

As part of our commitment to safety and being good neighbors, we kindly ask that you:
Use the designated pick-up and drop-off lane each day.
Avoid using the Our Lady of Malibu (OLM) parking lots.
Park only in the Webster lot.
Keep Pre-K/TK green curb drop-offs quick to ensure smooth turnover — this area is reserved for families using the Pre-K/TK gate. If your student enters through the main gate (K–5), please use the lower lot or main valet line.
Thank you for helping us ensure smooth arrivals and dismissals each day. Creating a safe and positive learning environment is our top priority — and it starts with all of us working together. We truly appreciate your support!
