Superintendent's Message
Dear Families,
As education continues to evolve, one thing remains constant: the most important factor in a classroom is not the technology available to students, but the quality of the learning experience we create for them.
Technology has become an important part of teaching and learning, providing new ways for students to access information, collaborate, create, and demonstrate their learning. At the same time, we should continually ask an important question: What role and value is technology playing in our student's learning experience?
Sometimes a digital tool is the best choice. Other times, students benefit more from a book, pencil and paper, hands-on materials, face-to-face conversation, collaboration, or simply time to think and problem-solve. Our goal is meaningful learning, with technology used intentionally when it enhances that learning.
This year, we are asking our teachers to think more intentionally about the role technology plays in their classrooms. We recently shared Adding Intentionality to Tech Use: Strategies for Teachers with our staff, and we thought it was worth sharing with our families as well. The article provides a helpful perspective and some practical considerations for thinking about when technology adds value and when another approach may better support learning.
Forward Together,
Dr. Tracy Thurwanger
Superintendent

Where Can I Go For Help?
While we work to ensure that your student's experience in Plano CUSD #88 is full of exceptional learning experiences, we know that there may be times when a parent or guardian need support. As a result, I want to share with our families where you can get your questions answered and work in partnership with our staff and leadership to do so.
First Step in Parent - School Communication
Your student's teacher is always the best place to start for any issue that is coming up in the classroom. Your student's teachers work directly with your student each day and become very familiar with their needs academically, socially, emotionally, and behaviorally.
Second Step in Parent - School Communication
The second line of communication may be your student's dean or assistant principal. Administrators typically support matters related to academics or behavior. When in doubt, the dean or assistant principal can quickly support a parent in getting to the right place. In the event that you are seeking support with social or emotional matters, a school counselor or social worker may be the right place to seek support.

Third Step in Parent - School Communication
At the third step, a parent may need to address a concern with a principal. Our principals work with all building staff and are a great resource when a matter has reached an elevated level and there is a need for additional perspective or resolution that has not occurred at step one or two.
- P.H. Miller: Mrs. Lakisha Redmond, lredmond@plano88.org, Principal
- Centennial: Dr. Leslie Kressin, lkressin@plano88.org, Principal
- EGJ: Mr. Nate Campbell, natecampbell@plano88.org, Principal
- PMS: Mr. Brian Davis, bdavis@plano88.org, Principal
- PHS: Mr. Mark Heller, mheller@plano88.org, Principal
Fourth Step in Parent - School Communication
Our goal is to always resolve issues at the building level. If at any time the building team or parent feel that communication has been exhausted and support from administration at the district level is needed to move forward, a parent or administrator may reach out to a district-level administrator for additional discussion and solutions to ensure all parties are able to move forward together for the betterment of the student. At level four the matters should be addressed to the district administrator by their assigned roles.
Matters Related to Academics Affairs
- Preschool - 6th Grade: Mrs. Faith Skinner, fskinner@plano88.org
- Middle - High School: Mrs. Meghan Kerr, mkerr@plano88.org
Our directors work with our building principals and other administrators directly, on a daily basis. They are the first step in seeking support for all things learning.
Matters Related to Student Management
- Executive Director: Mrs. Abby Alvarez, aalvarez@plano88.org
Mrs. Alvarez wears many hats and largely oversees student management matters and serves as our lead administrator for registration and residency. Mrs. Alvarez has a strong background in English Language Learning and serves as the administrator for our Bilingual Parent Advisory Committee.
Fifth Step in Parent - School Communication
- Chief School Business Official: Mr. Luke Baughman, baughman@plano88.org
Mr. Luke Baughman serves as the second in command to the Superintendent. His Operations Director supervises transportation, facilities, and food service, with Luke taking the lead with technology, among many other areas.
Sixth Step in Parent - School Communication
As Superintendent of Plano CUSD #88, I want to express that my and our goal is to work in partnership with our parents and community to effectively address any matter that comes to our attention.
- Dr. Tracy Thurwanger, tthurwanger@plano88.org
The best way to resolve an issue is to use the steps of communication listed above.
Final Step in Parent - School Communication
Parents are welcome to attend monthly Board of Education meetings. Our Board of Education website can be found here. Board of Education meetings are an excellent way to hear about the amazing things happening in our district including student celebrations, learning efforts, fiscal health, and programming.
If a matter arises that needs support, I ask that you reach out to a district leader. You are always welcome to address the Board in person or in an email. It is important to note that the Board of Education can not make public comment on matters related to an individuals, students, staff, or groups.

However, to determine eligibility for your child(ren) to receive additional benefits, including waived or reduced registration fees, you will need to complete a household income form.

In order to fill out the form, you will need the names of every member in your household, the grade/school’s name for all students, and the annual household income.
