FCPS Community Bulletin Board

Superintendent’s Message
Last week, we had the honor of celebrating inspiring students at our annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration, held at Gov. Thomas Johnson High School. This meaningful event recognizes students who exemplify outstanding leadership, character, and service within their school communities.
Each school nominates one student who reflects Dr. King’s legacy through their actions, values, and commitment to others. A complete list of this year’s honorees can be found below. The PDF of the program is below.
Our Public Affairs Department had the opportunity to speak with several nominees, who each shared the name of an FCPS employee who has served as a positive role model in their lives.
Ballenger Creek Middle School nominee Aissatou Barry recognized music teacher Windy Schmidt, sharing that she continually inspires her to keep pushing forward and offers valuable guidance.
North Frederick Elementary School nominee Kai Harrington highlighted classroom teacher Janae Aiken for making learning fun and encouraging students to persevere through challenges.
Gov. Thomas Johnson Middle School nominee Jalen White thanked science teacher Stephen Porter for being caring, supportive, and always willing to listen and answer questions.
Walkersville High School nominee Josie Ritchie shared her appreciation for school counselor Nikole Ramsay, who gives her the confidence to make strong decisions and provides support during difficult times. She also recognized Sally Huguley, Teacher Academy of Maryland instructor at the FCPS Career & Technology Center, for pushing her beyond her comfort zone and helping her grow as a future educator.
We are incredibly proud of the students honored at last week’s King Celebration and deeply grateful for the educators and staff members who continue to inspire, support, and uplift them every day.
Thank you,
Dr. Dyson

In addition to students being recognized, there were student performances by the Crestwood Middle School Choir, a Soloist from Frederick High School, the Twin Ridge Elementary School Choir, and the Walkersville High School Step Team. Students from Frederick High School hosted and emceed the event.
2027 Recommended Operating Budget
FCPS Superintendent Announces Recommended Fiscal Year 2027 Budget
Frederick County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Cheryl L. Dyson shared her recommended Fiscal Year 2027 operating budget with a commitment to maintaining existing vital programs and services.
Her recommended budget is based on feedback received from the FCPS community, including students, staff, and community members. It takes into account a complex fiscal landscape with rising costs, Blueprint mandates, and local revenue constraints.
The total budget request is $41,976,058, which is $38,165,778 over the FY2026 Frederick County government funding level.
The recommendation is focused on the mandatory costs required to keep FCPS operating – including salaries, benefits, utilities, along with retaining the exceptional staff who support students.
“We are a community of students, staff and families who believe in the power of education to change lives,” Dr. Dyson said. “Even as we navigate fiscal constraints, our belief remains strong. Together, we will continue to serve, to adapt and to ensure that every child in Frederick County has the opportunity to succeed.”
FCPS remains focused on:
- Maintaining high-quality teaching and learning
- Safe and welcoming schools
- Ensuring every student receives the strong academic, behavioral, and social-emotional supports needed.
