📚 A Peek at Learning at Boulevard This Week
We are excited to share the meaningful learning happening across grade levels! Below is a snapshot of student experiences, aligned standards, and ways families can support learning at home.
🌟 Kindergarten
What students are learning:
Kindergarten students engaged in differentiated literacy tasks, including independent writing using high-frequency words such as they and there. In small groups, students focused on phonics by learning the /th/ digraph (both voiced and unvoiced sounds) through word encoding (e.g., thumb, thin, them). Students also participated in a read-aloud of Bear Snores On, making connections between story elements and science concepts like hibernation and nocturnal animals.
Ohio Learning Standards:
- RF.K.3: Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words
- W.K.2: Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to compose informative texts
- RI.K.1: With prompting and support, ask and answer questions about key details in a text
Parent Tip:
Practice the /th/ sound at home by asking your child to sort words by sound (thin vs. them). During reading time, pause to ask simple questions like, “What is the animal doing?” or “Is this animal awake at night or during the day?” to build comprehension and vocabulary.
🔢 1st Grade
What students are learning:
First grade students worked on adding and subtracting by tens using hundreds charts and visual models like ten sticks. They applied these skills within story problem contexts to strengthen both computation and problem-solving.
Ohio Learning Standards:
- 1.NBT.C.4: Add within 100, including adding a two-digit number and a multiple of 10
- 1.OA.A.1: Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems
Parent Tip:
Use real-life examples to practice tens! Ask your child questions like, “If we have 30 apples and get 10 more, how many do we have?” Encourage them to explain their thinking using drawings or objects.
✍️ 3rd Grade
What students are learning:
Third grade students worked independently on informational writing, focusing on crafting strong topic sentences, organizing supporting details, and citing evidence from multiple sources to support their ideas.
Ohio Learning Standards:
- W.3.2: Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and information clearly
- RI.3.1: Ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding of a text, referring explicitly to the text
Parent Tip:
Encourage your child to share what they are writing about and ask, “What is your main idea?” or “What facts support your thinking?” Reading nonfiction texts at home and discussing key details can strengthen both reading and writing skills.
We are looking forward a productive week ahead!
Have a wonderful weekend,
Principal Mahoney-Curry
✍️ 3er Grado
Directora Mahoney-Curry
RISE UP, LEVEL UP, SHOW UP
Coming to school regularly helps students feel connected and confident.
Every day of school counts. When students attend school regularly, they build strong routines, stay connected to learning, and make steady academic progress. Our goal is to reach a 95% weekly attendance rate in every grade level, K–5, and we can only do this with strong family partnerships.
By ensuring students arrive at school on time and every day, families play a key role in reducing chronic absenteeism and supporting student success. Let’s work together to help every student be present, engaged, and ready to learn—because every minute counts at Boulevard.
