NEWS FROM SECOND GRADE

Second graders are having so much fun in science! We have been learning about plants and their interactions. In this unit, students have learned about how seeds travel as they made models of various types of seeds, and dropped them as if they were a human tree, to see how the seeds travel differently. Second graders also made a “fluffadoo” animal, as a model to see how animal fur can carry seeds. Additionally, each second grader has planted their very own cup of grass. We are observing and discussing the needs of various plants and using our grass as part of these experiments! We love science!

NEWS FROM THIRD GRADE

In third grade, we are reading Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by the legendary Roald Dahl. Students are getting to know the characters and exploring the unique traits that make each one so memorable. We have been enjoying lively discussions about the story and making predictions about what will happen next.

Students are also diving into their ocean creature research projects. They will become both fact collectors and teachers as they research their chosen ocean creature. After gathering information, students will create a Google Slides presentation to share their learning with the class. This project will help build research, writing, and presentation skills while allowing students to explore the fascinating world of ocean life.

Third Grade Garden News

Our third grade students have been busy enjoying the beauty of our school garden! During this special time outdoors, students are reading The Chicken Squad and bringing stories to life in a peaceful, natural setting.

The combination of fresh air, sunshine, and great books has made reading even more exciting. Students are not only strengthening their literacy skills, but also developing a deeper appreciation for nature and our garden space.

We love seeing our students so engaged, relaxed, and inspired while learning outside!

NEWS FROM SIXTH GRADE

Sixth graders have been working hard on a special essay contest titled "Stillwater at 250: Honoring Our Past, Imagining Our Future." In connection with America's upcoming 250th anniversary, students have been researching Stillwater Township's rich history, exploring how our local roots connect to larger American values like resilience and community. Through their writing, they are reflecting on our town's historical foundations, sharing personal stories about what makes Stillwater feel like home, and discussing how we can preserve our favorite traditions for the future. The essay contest winners will be officially announced during our end-of-year awards ceremony on the last day of school.

In addition to their essays, our 6th graders were honored to be asked by the Stillwater Recreation Committee to create the official Stillwater Township display board for this year at the Sussex County Fairgrounds! The completed display will be showcased from June through August. Students focused on showing how a small town carries history forward through the people who live there today bringing a meaningful bridge between generations. To build the display, they researched local historical buildings, located them on a map of Stillwater, created an interactive timeline of our town's history, and surrounded it all with heartfelt student reflections on "what Stillwater means to me." It beautifully captures both our unique local identity and America’s 250th anniversary. Be sure to check out the display if you visit the fairgrounds this summer!

NEWS FROM MRS. RUSS

Our 5th graders have been finishing the year strong. In Math, students are learning conversions. Each student received a colorful reference sheet from Mrs. Bickhardt, so if they’re struggling to remember how many feet are in a mile (me, too!), remind them that they should have a reference sheet in their homework folders. In ELA, we’re reading Refugee by Alan Gratz, which explores the similarities and differences between three refugee kids in different places and time periods: a Jewish boy escaping Nazi Germany, a Cuban girl fleeing to Florida in 1994, and a Syrian boy traveling to Europe in 2015. We’re also finishing our final morphology unit this week: the Latin root aud, as in audio, audition, audible, and auditory. One of the words to define is “audiotape” – if you’ve never tried describing how “taping” used to mean “recording” to kids who have never seen a VHS or cassette tape, now is your chance!

PE Classes Connect Across Schools in Virtual Collaboration!

Thanks to the incredible help and ideas of Mrs. Bashioum from Charleroi Elementary School in Western Pennsylvania, our PE program recently partnered with Lu for an exciting virtual cross-school experience!

After several Google Meet planning sessions, we matched a 3rd grade class and a Kindergarten class from each school based on aligned schedules. Together, we carefully selected games for each grade level that would work for both groups — even making some modifications along the way to fit how our students play.

Our 3rd graders competed in Twins (four teams per school, highest score wins!) and played rounds of Galactic, while our Kindergarteners took on Target and Wall, where every student had their own ball.

The energy was incredible — students were overjoyed to connect and compete with peers from another school! To make it all possible, an active board was set up with a live-streamed Google Meet so every student could see and be part of the action in real time.

This was a truly special experience, and we hope it’s just the start of a lasting partnership between our schools!
