Cassi Flores, Emerging Leader Class of 2024

The ALA Emerging Leaders program is an amazing opportunity for new librarians to dive into meaningful committee-type work. Participants are assigned projects from prominent library-related organizations and are guided through every step by a dedicated mentor librarian. In January, all of the Emerging Leaders meet in person at the LibLearnX conference. Then each group meets through Zoom calls with the work divided amongst the members. The excitement peaks when they finally meet again in-person and present their work at a poster session at the ALA Conference in June. This program not only fosters strong partnerships but also connects new librarians with others nationwide, creating a network that enriches both professional and personal goals.

Question: I am a new librarian and am looking for ways to begin the collaboration process at my new school. Any suggestions?

Signed - Collaboratively Hopeful

Dear Collaboratively Hopeful,

Welcome to the best profession. As the school year begins, introduce yourself to everyone and spread the word that you are willing to collaborate. Conversations lead to collaboration. Be a super sleuth, listen at department meetings, in the hallways, and the teacher lounge--asking teachers what they are teaching and then offering how you can be of service. Remember that collaboration comes in many forms; provide resources, help classes with the research process, or even co-teach a lesson. Start with one teacher and build from there. I am sure in no time you will be collaboratively involved!

If you have a question for Ivanna, please send it to info@maslonline.org.
