Mrs. Gangel's Class Newsletter

On Monday, February 19th, Dr. Kari Bolen came to teach us about how to take care of our teeth. She talked about how to brush your teeth and had the students practice on fake teeth. She talked about healthy things to eat and unhealthy things to eat. She dressed up in her dental gear and showed students what she would look like when students came to see her. Then she had some of the students dress up as a dentist, dental assistant, and a patient. Then those students modeled what would happen at the dentist. At the end of the presentation, she gave each student a toothbrush. It was a fun filled presentation for the students.

Student’s commented on what they learned:

Alister- “Learning what happens when you go to the dentist.”

Lily- “If you don’t brush your teeth, you will get holes in your them.”

Abby- "Brush your teeth and go to the dentist and do not eat sugar and I think that's all."

Caleb- “I learned that you have to brush your teeth when you eat sugar.”

Jemma- “I learned that when you are done brushing your teeth, you should use mouth wash and stuff. Then spit it out.”

Calvin- “You should brush your teeth after you eat sugar.”

Kirbee- “You should eat healthy like apples.”

Maggie- “That it is o.k. to have a little bit of candy but make sure you brush your teeth after you have it.”

Dawson- “That sugar is bad for your teeth.”

Serenity- “Candy is not good for your teeth but apples are.”

Spartin- “I learned how to brush my teeth.”

Kiah- “Apple juice is not healthy.”

Victoria- “Candy is bad for your teeth but vegetables are really good for your teeth. And keep brushing.”

Kalani- “After you eat a lot of sweets, you need to brush your teeth.”

Greek Mythology

In 6th Grade we started our Greek Mythology unit where we were introduced to a variety of Greek Myths. Students chose which myth they read as their favorite. We are doing our Greek Mythology unit in conjunction with our world history unit of Ancient Greece!

Alexis: My favorite is Psyche because I love her story

Carter: My favorite myth was the Minotaur because he was half man and half bull and ate human sacrifices and he is cool.

Tate: The Greek myth which is my favorite is of Eros and Psyche, because I think their story is the cutest.

Olivia: My favorite Greek myth is Artemis because she can defend herself with cool weapons, and she is not like the other girls in Greek myths, and I thought that was really cool.

Brody :My favorite Greek myth would be Apollo because I think riding a chariot would be really cool.

Lorrae: My favorite is Aphrodite because I thought her story was really cool and I didn’t expect her story to be that cool.

Arya: My favorite is Athene because she can become into a really useful thing.

Kendra: My favorite myth was Theseus because he fought the Minotaur, won, and left with the ruler's two daughters..

Marlie: My favorite myth was Poseidon because he was always trying to win and get a girl but then he discovered he could make things and then got all distracted by what he made and left her. Tragic.

Magnus: My favorite is Kratos because he has the best story out of all of the Greek gods.He is God of War and he is unstoppable.Kratos is just awesome.

Rachel: My favorite character is Athene’s story because she was thinking about profit, and helping people know how trade and goods, were good for her villagers and believers.

Lizzie: My favorite myth is Aphrodite because I liked her story and I did not expect her story to be like that.

Noelle: My favorite is Psyche because she had done all those tasks but really she didn't cupid helped her and she outsmarted Aphrodite, and is prettier than her, and she looks like a stupid pretty girl but really she is brave because she went to the underworld which I could never do.

Madison: My favorite thing from the myth world is Artemis, she is Zeus’s daughter. She is brave and full of courage. I like her. She is great.

Eva: My favorite is Hercules because he has a bunch of challenges but every one of them he could complete which proves he’s strong and can defeat everything.

Alice: My favorite is Hercules because he is very strong and had lots of challenges which means that he can defeat lots of monsters which made me like his story more.

Sylvan: My favorite is probably Aphrodite because I like her story and she is super beautiful.

Wyatt: My favorite myth would be Zeus because he was powerful, brave, strong and was helpful.

I want to start by saying I have had an absolute blast teaching PE! The students and staff we have here at CES make even the most challenging days incredibly rewarding. Also, the support my family and I have received from you (the community) has completely blown us away, so thank you for such an awesome year thus far!

During the month of February, we completed our basketball unit for grades JK-6th. Basketball is a sport I have played from a very young age and now have the privilege of coaching. Basketball is also a sport of various skills, from dribbling to passing, shooting, and playing defense. I light up when I see a student persevere through the challenging task of learning to dribble or shoot a ball.

That is one thing I have really been focusing on in class is perseverance and never giving up. I can proudly say that I did not have a single student give up or sit out during our basketball unit. As a result, I believe all students improved, but more importantly they proved to themselves that they can do difficult things. That no matter how badly they want to quit, if they just keep going, they will eventually succeed. Watching them find that success and continue to push themselves will always put a smile on my face.

As I mentioned, I coach basketball at the high school, so I invited some players from both the boys’ and girls’ teams to help us out during the unit. While I knew my students would really enjoy seeing “the older kids”, I was surprised at just how much the high school students looked forward to coming over to help. I will be doing more to involve high school students in my classes and bridge the gap between CES and CHS Thank you again for sharing your kid(s) with me!
