Former professional tennis player, Roger Federer, was ranked #1 in the world in men's singles for 310 weeks ... 2nd most all-time ... including a record 237 consecutive weeks. Over the course of two decades, he emerged as one of the greatest tennis players who ever lived. He played 1,526 singles matches in his career and won almost 80 percent. He hoisted 20 Grand Slam trophies, including Wimbledon a record eight times. Would you believe that he only won an average of 54% of the points in those 1,526 matches? Yep, in all his success, he actually lost nearly half of his points ... which brings us to my favorite Roger Federer quote from a commencement speech he delivered at Dartmouth,
“When you lose every second point, on average, you learn not to dwell on every shot. You teach yourself to think, ‘OK, I double-faulted. It’s only a point.’ When you’re playing a point, it has to be the most important thing in the world, and it is. But when it’s behind you, it’s behind you. This mindset is really crucial, because it frees you to fully commit to the next point and the next point after that, with intensity, clarity and focus.”
Wow - talk about developing the mindset of a champion!
Over this past week, our Brickies have worked hard, embraced challenges, and been determined to overcome hard moments. We saw some THRILLING victories as well as some difficult defeats, but our ability to move to the "next point" enabled each one to be a lesson learned towards improvement ... and that is the sign of a CHAMPION!
Game - Set - Match ... it's time for BricksCenter!
Boys Tennis
For boys tennis, it was IHSAA SECTIONAL WEEK with quarterfinal action taking place on Wednesday and the semifinal & championship rounds being played on Thursday ... right here at Hobart.
The Bricks drew a bye in the first round, which means our boys got the night off on Wednesday, but had to be at their BEST on Thursday to chase a second straight Sectional title and the 7th in school history.
Hobart faced neighborhood rival River Forest in the semifinal round and saw perhaps the MATCH OF THE NIGHT at #1 singles between Brickie senior Gabe Gutierrez and RF senior Jeffrey Bean. Gabe rallied from behind to win the first set 7-6 in a 9-7 tiebreaker ... and then held off a strong charge from Jeffrey to win the second set 7-5! WOW!! Fortunately the Bricks CRUISED at all other varsity spots with senior Cash Salunga (#2 singles) & sophomore Mav Becerra (#3 singles) each winning in straight sets along with the #1 doubles team of juniors Angel Gomez & Teddy Ho! The Ingots did not field a #2 doubles squad, so the final score was 5-0 BRICKIES!!
In the other semifinal match, the Merrillville Pirates avenged an early season loss to Andrean and edged out the '9ers 3-2 to advance.
After a 30-minute break, the Pirates & Brickies were back on the courts to decide the 'ship!
Back on September 22nd, Hobart defeated Merrillville 5-0. Could the Pirates be avengers again?
Our boys were FANTASTIC right from the first serve and WON the first set easily at all 5 varsity spots! Gomez & Ho @ #1 doubles were the first to win the 2nd set ... giving Hobart a 1-0 lead. Gutierrez was next @ #1 singles to make it 2-0 Brickies ... and when Salunga won @ #2 singles, Hobart all but wrapped up the title!! Becerra also won in straight sets @ #3 singles and the duo of junior Mason Mitchell & senior Jayden Standish gave us the best COMEBACK of the night when they rallied from down 4-1 in the 2nd set to tie it 6-6 and force a tiebreaker!! The tiebreaker is a "win-by-2" to 7 and Mitchell & Standish found themselves trailing 6-3, but fought back and WON A THRILLER 11-9 to make it a 5-0 BRICKIE SWEEP IN THE CHAMPIONSHIP!!! WOW!! WHAT A NIGHT!!!
WEEEEEEEEEEE ARE THE CHAMPIONS ... MY FRIEEEEEEEEEEEEENDS!!!
CONGRATULATIONS to Coach Cade Brumley, assistant coach Jacob Lewis, and all of our boys for winning the 2025 IHSAA TENNIS SECTIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP!! This is the 7th title in school history and the FIRST time our guys have gone BACK-TO-BACK EVER!!!
The Brickies are now 12-5, IHSAA Sectional Champs, and will face South Bend St Joe in the IHSAA REGIONAL on Tuesday over at LaPorte. SB St Joe is currently ranked #6 in Indiana. You know what they say ... "Be at your best when your best is needed" ... GOOD LUCK GUYS!! WE BELIEVE!!!

On a B-E-A-UTIFUL Saturday morning on the campus of Kankakee Valley High School, the Brickie harriers competed in the Northwest Crossroads Conference Championship Meet!
Girls
Once the boys race concluded, it was time for the girls to SHINE ... and that they did!! In one of the faster races in recent memory with two girls from Kankakee Valley breaking the 19-minute mark, senior Cassie Cohen crossed the finish line in 5th overall with a time of 19:49 to earn FIRST TEAM ALL NCC HONORS!! Sophomore Lilliana Lopez also cracked the top 20 after placing 17th overall - squeaking into the chute in just under 22 minutes (21:59) to earn HONORABLE MENTION NCC!! Seniors Millie Massey (25th), Audrey Turley (26th) & Zaria Gildon (37th) rounded out the varsity scoring for Hobart on the day with classmate Alissa Trail (40th) & sophomore Khloe Reyes (50th) completing the varsity roster. The Munster Mustangs claimed the crown with a team score of 34 and our Lady Brickies finished a respectable 4th in the team standings.
Boys
Since the boys will run first at the IHSAA State Finals on November 1st, they did so on Saturday at the NCC Championship. Senior Lu Cohen was first into the chute for Hobart (... and 26th overall) with a SEASON BEST time of 18:29! Junior Nolan Shaginaw was next for the Bricks in 40th overall. Senior Mason Thorpe (45th) and juniors Jerry Theodorakos (48th) & Jayden Cooper (63rd) rounded out the top 5 finishers for Hobart. Lowell was the over champion on the day after seeing all 5 varsity runners place in the top 7 overall - whoa. The Brickies ended up 7th in the team standings on a fast morning for some racing.
The IHSAA Sectional will be run at Sunset Hill Farm County Park on Saturday, October 18th, which means our kids have two weeks to finalize preparation for their post-season run!

THANK YOU Mackie Stankich for sharing these GREAT PHOTOS!
Volleyball
With just two weeks remaining in the regular season, our girls were looking to build some momentum, continue gaining confidence and celebrate some seniors with a pair of games on the docket this past week!
On Monday night, the Lady Brickies were at Griffith High School for a non-conference matchup with the Panthers. Hobart got off the bus ready to roll ... DOMINATED the first set 25-12 and kept the proverbial pedal to the metal in the 2nd set to win 25-15 for a 2-0 lead!! In the 3rd set, the host Panthers tried to rally and were able to force extra points, but in the end this one was ALL BRICKIES as our girls closed it out 26-24 for the 3-0 SWEEP!!! Junior Alissa Hope led the attack with a game-high 8 kills and senior Riley Weber was right behind her with 7. Senior Maddie Lams anchored the Brickie D-D-D-DEFENSE with 16 digs & 18 serves received and classmate Kalli Butcher finished with 13 assists in the win!
Thursday night was SENIOR NIGHT against NCC foe Highland. Before the varsity warmup began, senior players Maddie Lams, Kalli Butcher, Riley Weber & Lena Raygoza ... along with manager Christian Haymon ... were recognized for the commitment and dedication to Lady Brickie volleyball. Even though it was a different night, the large crowd in attendance saw the SAME RESULT as Monday - a 3-0 BRICKIE SWEEP!! Hobart won 25-14, 25-15 and 25-20 to close it out!! Lams & Weber combined for a total of 31 serves received and 26 digs ... Hope & Raygoza combined for 7 blocks ... Butcher finished with 20 assists and junior Marin Ray added 9 in the NCC win!
Hobart is now 11-15 overall and 3-7 in NCC play. The Lady Brickies will close out the regular season this upcoming week with games against Hammond Central (Monday), Hanover Central (Tuesday) & Kankakee Valley (Thursday). LET'S GO GIRLS!!

CONGRATULATIONS to senior Kalli Butcher for surpassing 1,000 career assists!
THANK YOU Ken Cawthon for sharing these photos!

Girls
On Tuesday, Hobart hosted the Highland Trojans in the final Northwest Crossroads Conference game for both teams. On paper, this one looked like it would be close, but our girls had other plans! Sophomore Rylee Christman lit up the scoreboard with 4 GOOOOOOOOOAAALLS on the night! WOW!! Junior Kurah Krucina and freshman Maci Simpson also scored a goal each and sophomore Val Rodriguez dished out 3 assists in the IMPRESSIVE 6-0 VICTORY!!
Thursday, a quick trip over to Merrillville ended early thanks to the IHSAA Mercy Rule as the Brickies once again brought their "A-game" and DOMINATED the host Pirates by a 9-0 margin!! Krucina was INCREDIBLE with a 5-GOOOOOOOOAAALL performance! Christman scored twice and added 3 assists and both Rodriguez & junior Becky Roediger also sent shots into the back of the net in the easy win! Sophomore goalkeeper London Hacker and junior D-D-D-DEFENSIVE leaders Emma Bullington & Liv Mehay were LOCKED IN to protect the net in Hobart's 6th straight SHUTOUT WIN! WOW!
On Saturday afternoon, the Lady Bricks headed to Valparaiso to square off with Victory Christian Academy. The Lions ... ranked #8 in the area ... entered the contest with a record of 12-1-1. Hobart ... ranked #7 in the area ... entered the contest with a record of 11-4. In the first half of an INTENSE non-conference game, Bullington launched a B-E-A-UTIFUL free kick straight into the net for a Brickie GOOOOOOOOOOOAAALL and a 1-0 advantage!! The Hobart D-D-D-DEFENSE did what they've done all year the rest of the way ... completely shutting down any opportunities for the Lions and sealing the deal in a 1-0 SHUTOUT VICTORY!! WHAT A GAME FOR OUR GIRLS!!!
*Fun Fact: The Lady Bricks have won 7 in a row ... outscoring their opponents 37-0 over that stretch!! WOW!!
Hobart finished the regular season with a record of 12-4 and will serve as host for the IHSAA SECTIONAL. Our girls play Class 3A #18-ranked Chesterton in the first round on Tuesday night @ The Brickyard. Kickoff is slated for 6pm - GOOD LUCK LADIES!!!
Boys
On Monday night, the Brickies faced Chesterton in the final home contest of the regular season ... and it was GAME ON against the NWI powerhouse Trojans! Early on, Chesterton dominated the time of possession and constantly tried to put pressure on the Hobart goal, but our boys hung in there ... compacted the D-D-D-DEFENSE and held their ground! With just under 10 minutes remaining in the first half, senior Gabe Rodriguez scored a GOOOOOOOOOOOAAAALL on a nifty move in front of the net to give the Brickies a 1-0 lead! Seven minutes after the start of the 2nd half, it was Rodriguez AGAIN ... this time on a penalty shot that hit NUTHIN but NET ... to make it 2-0 Brickies! At the twelve minute mark, Rodriguez registered a HAT TRICK with his 3rd GOOOOOOOOOOAAAALL of the night! By now, Chesterton was no longer controlling the time of possession ... it was ALL BRICKIES!! Our boys were running the field, shifting collectively to transition or to protect, and playing HARD TOGETHER!! With 20 minutes left in the game, junior Cameron Guess made an AMAZING move to get to the middle and then dropped a dime to Gabe on the left side who sent another shot into the back of the net for a 4-0 HOBART LEAD!! WOW!! The visiting Trojans tried desperately to manufacture something on offense, but the Brickie defense was STELLAR ALL NIGHT!! When the clock ran out, the final score showed Hobart 4, Chesterton 0!!! WHAT A GAME!!! Rodriguez was phenomenal with 4 goals ... Guess finished with 2 assists ... and the Brickie D-D-D-DEFENSE led by sophomore goalie Michael Klaich (9 saves) was FANTASTIC in the shutout win!!
Wednesday night brought a road trip west on Ridge Road over to Highland for the final NCC game of the year. Unfortunately, the Brickie offense ... that was ON FIRE against the Trojans of Chesterton on Monday ... couldn't get going against the Trojans of Highland and our boys returned home with a tough 1-0 defeat.
On Saturday morning, Merrillville was the destination for the regular season finale. The host Pirates scored a first half goal and took a 1-0 lead into the break. Our boys came out READY TO ROCK in the 2nd half ... scored 3 GOOOOOOOOOOAAALLS and returned home with a nice 3-1 VICTORY!!! Senior Gabe "All He Does is Score Goals" Rodriguez added 2 more scores to his season total of 11 and junior Cam Guess added one in the non-conference win!
The Brickies finished the regular season with a record of 7-7-2 and will open IHSAA Sectional play against Kankakee Valley on Tuesday. The Kougars are also the sectional host, so our boys will need to be at their BEST!! GO GET EM GUYS!!
#WEAREONE
THANK YOU Maria Christman for these GREAT PHOTOS of our girls!

THANK YOU Baylee Rouse for the AWESOME PICS of our boys!
Football
On Friday night, the Brickies made the long trek down to Cedar Lake to face the Hanover Central Wildcats. The 'Cats had won each of the previous two meetings - both having implications on the NCC title. Hobart ... having lost back-to-back heartbreakers to Andrean & Lowell as well as battling some adversity with illness & injury ... was looking to get back on track.
It was Homecoming and the host Wildcats were FIRED UP! Hanover scored 9 first quarter points to claim an early lead. In the 2nd stanza, the Brickies came to life and scored on a 1-yd plunge by junior quarterback Aleks Tatum to get within 9-7!
After the Brickie D-D-D-DEFNSE forced a punt with just over 2 minutes still left in the quarter, Tatum connected with classmate Stephen Miller on a long pass to get the offense within striking distance ... and two plays later Tatum ran it in to make it 13-9 BRICKIES heading into the halftime break!
Hobart got the ball to begin the 3rd quarter, but the Wildcat defense forced a punt. On Hanover's 3rd play, junior Nathan Sobczynski stepped in front of a pass, intercepted the ball, and raced down the sidelines into the endzone for a PICK 6 TOUCHDOWN!!! The Bricks were successful on a 2-pt conversion and with 8:30 left in the quarter, the scoreboard showed a 21-9 Hobart lead!!
Hanover Central responded quickly with a score cut the deficit to 21-16, but Sobczynski struck again when he returned the ensuing kickoff all the way to the Wildcat 26 yard line! WOW! Two plays later, Tatum found Miller in the endzone for a 23-yard TOUCHDOWN!!
Early in the final period, sophomore Miles White effectively closed the door on any hopes of a Wildcat comeback when he took a handoff and sprinted around the left side for a 61-yard TOUCHDOWN!!!
Each team would tack on one more score to arrive at the final tally of Hobart 42, Hanover Central 23!!
Tatum finished the game with 157 yards passing to go along with 105 yards rushing and 4 TOTAL TOUCHDOWNS!! WOW! White had 75 yards on the ground and junior Luke Richardson carried the pill 10 times for 40 yards. Miller ended up catching 6 passes for 94 yards and junior kicker Peter Janda went 4/4 on extra points.
Sobczynski had a MONSTER game with 2 catches for 54 yards, 4 tackles, 1 kick return for 64 yards and 1 interception that he returned for a TOUCHDOWN! WOW!!
For the Brickie D-D-D-DEFENSE, White (12) and senior Josh Diaz (10) each recorded double-digit tackles ... senior Preston Perez, sophomore Terry Earvin, Miller & fellow junior Vontrell Jones each added 9 ... and sophomore Michael Klaich punted 5 times with an average kick of 47.5 yards - pinning the 'Cats inside their own 20-yard line 4 times in the NCC win!
Hobart is now 5-2 on the year and 3-2 in the NCC. Our boys will return home for the final two weeks of the regular season with games against Morton (10/10) and Highland (10/17) before IHSAA Sectional play begins.
