π Cool Cats READ! πΎ
Our School Is Reading Together!
Our entire school is excited to read The World According to Humphrey by Betty G. Birney!
Each week, students will answer a question about the book to earn points for their class. At the end of the book, the three classes with the most points will win a pizza party!
We will also share a weekly summary of the chapters along with an optional family activity you can enjoy at home. We hope your family will join Humphrey on his adventures and have fun reading together!

HCS Attendance Policy for 2026-2027
Please review the New Attendance Policy online at https://www.horrycountyschools.net/departments-services/policy-and-legal-issues/attendance-policy-updates
A few items to highlight:
Parent notes are accepted. Parents may submit notes for up to 6 school days, and these days will be counted as parent-excused absences. Parent notes will NOT be accepted during designated state testing dates.
A parent has up to 3 days upon the studentβs return to submit medical notes or a parent-excused note. A parent may also submit a parent-excused note before the absence. These notes may be delivered in person or emailed to KEAttendance@horrycountyschools.net
For more information, contact Kristi Bratcher in the attendance office at 843-365-3777 or email: Kbratcher@horrycountyschools.net.
Students may submit as many medical notes as needed. However, after 10 full days of medically excused absences, the student will be required to make up missed instructional time.
Students who miss 3 consecutive, full-day, unexcused absences must have an Attendance Intervention Plan. Students who miss 5 or more full-day unexcused absences must have an Attendance Intervention Plan.
At the elementary level, students who have 10 unexcused tardies (this includes morning and afternoon tardies combined) must have an Attendance Intervention Plan.
For Child Development (CD) Students only: After 10 consecutive unexcused absences, CD students may be removed from the program.

October Life skill for the month: βFriendshipβ
π FRIENDSHIP
Friendship means making and keeping friends through mutual trust, kindness, respect, and caring.
October is National Bullying Prevention Month!
During the month of October, students will learn positive ways to make and keep friends while also focusing on the importance of kindness, inclusion, and bullying prevention.
During classroom guidance lessons, students will practice recognizing the qualities of a good friend and using communication skills that strengthen peer relationships. We will also discuss important concepts such as fairness, forgiveness, respect, empathy, and problem-solving. These skills help students understand that healthy friendships take effort, communication, and care.
Friendships are an important part of a childβs social and emotional development. Having positive friendships can help children feel connected, supported, and confident.
Families Can Help at Home
Talk with your child about what it means to be a good friend. Encourage them to include others, use kind words, listen when friends are speaking, apologize when they make a mistake, and seek help from a trusted adult when they experience or witness bullying.
Reading books about friendship together is another great way to start meaningful conversations!
Friendship Books to Read Together
How to Make Friends with a Giant by Gennifer Choldenko
Friends to the End for Kids: The True Value of Friendship by Bradley Trevor Greive
Enemy Pie by Derek Munson
Our Friendship Rules by Peggy Moss and Dee Dee Tardif

Remember: A little kindness can make a BIG difference!
Be a friend. Include others. Choose kindness.
If you have any questions or if there is anything I can do to support you or your child this school year, please donβt hesitate to reach out. I am here to help! π

IN LOVING MEMORY OF CHERIA LIVINGSTON
In loving memory of our dear friend and colleague, Cheria Livingston, a special Buddy Bench has been placed in our school library, and a memorial tree has been planted outside the school near the gate. These lasting tributes will serve as beautiful reminders of Cheriaβs kindness, caring spirit, and the impact she made on our Kingston family. May her memory continue to inspire friendship, kindness, and love throughout our school community. π³π

SCHOOL SPIRIT
Let's show our school spirit!
Students are encouraged to wear school colors or Kingston T-shirts every Friday. School colors are blue and white. Wearing school colors each week is a proactive way of reminding students to maintain our safe and caring school. Each class that has at least 50% or more students wearing school colors will have their class name entered in a drawing. Two classes will win the Cool Cat sign to be placed on their door for the week, as well as some type of incentive (candy, ice cream, chips, etc). Each week we hope to choose a different class. Please encourage your child to participate in Spirit Day every Friday! Congratulations to our Spirit Day Winners: Mrs. Tanner's 3rd grade class and Mr. Lipak's 5th grade class. π

School Safety Drills
Our #1 goal is to ensure that Kingston Elementary is a SAFE environment for our Cool Cats. To do this, we hold a variety of safety drills throughout the year. Safety drills enhance school safety by allowing students and staff to understand proper emergency procedures outside of a crisis situation.
