Principal Message

Can you believe March is here and spring is just around the corner? Students seem to become excited at this time of year when the days get longer and the temps warm up. As we approach the final marking period of school, please be sure to remind your child that we continue to hold the same expectations in all areas of our school and on our buses.

“Be Safe! Be Respectful! Be Responsible!”

As the school year has progressed we have been pleased with the daily progress our students are making. Kindergarten classrooms are beginning to take on the appearance of first grade, first graders are demonstrating competencies of many second graders and our second graders have grown exponentially in preparation for the transition to grade three. Student improvement in reading, writing and mathematics is evidenced on a daily basis throughout the building. More importantly, students are working to establish independence which is crucial to students’ success. It is thrilling to watch students learn, grow and thrive!

We would like to once again thank all members of the Ruth Ann Primary Community for their continued commitment and support. As always, please never hesitate to call if you have any questions or concerns. Enjoy the beauty and the amazing bright colors of Spring!

Message from the Health Office

We are asking for donations of unopened packages of boys and girls socks and underwear. We have already exhausted our supply for this school year. We are in need of sizes to fit grades K – 2.

Parents could greatly help us by keeping a full set of clothes in their child’s book bag for emergency use. We greatly appreciate it!

Please feel free to call the Health Office at 301-766-8672 with any questions. Thank you.

Angie and Celena

Our literacy focus for ALL students is to build a strong foundation as students ‘learn to read’ so that they ‘read to learn.’ Here are some tips for families to engage with your reader at home!

  • Connect what your child reads with what happens in life. If reading a book about animals, relate it to your last trip to the zoo.
  • Fill a box with drawing and writing materials. Find opportunities for your child to write, such as the shopping list, thank you notes, or birthday cards or write a few sentences about something special. .
  • Ask your child questions about the story you've just read. Say something like, "Why do you think Clifford did that?" “How might Clifford feel and why?” “How might you change the (ending or setting or characters) in the story?”
  • Help your child pick books that are not too difficult. The aim is to give your child lots of successful reading experiences. Allow your child to read and REREAD the same stories to build fluency.
  • Have your ‘play with words!’ Using magnetic letters, whiteboard/marker, paper/pencil, or sugar/salt on a cookie tray, have them sound out and spell the word mat. Ask them to change one letter to make sat; then sat to sit; then sit to quit; then quit to quilt; then quilt to built! The possibilities are endless!
  • When your child has sounded out an unfamiliar word, have him or her re-read that sentence. Often kids are so busy figuring out a word they lose the meaning of what they've just read
