January Used Battery Drive

Do you have batteries at home that need to be recycled? Consider helping our school by sending in used/dead batteries the week of January 17-20 for our battery drive.

Reminder - IDs Are Required For All Visitors To Campus

In a continuous effort to maintain the highest level of safety and security for students on our campus, Frisco ISD requires that all visitors present an ID when coming to campus.

This is true for parents picking up sick students, parents checking students out for appointments, and parents coming for lunch, Mystery Reader, or GMR. Thank you for your understanding as we continue to make Rogers Elementary a safe and secure place for students and staff to learn.

1st Grade CogAT Testing

On Wednesday, January 25th and Thursday January 26th Rogers’ First Graders will take the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT). The test will be given over 2 days for approximately 1.5 hours (this time includes breaks). Please schedule morning appointments on days other than CogAT testing. The CogAT test gives teachers and parents a snapshot of students’ higher level thinking, reasoning, and problem solving abilities (verbal, nonverbal, quantitative, and overall ability), as compared to other first graders in the nation. Please be sure your first grader has a good night’s sleep and a healthy breakfast on this day. Please encourage your child with a hug, a reminder to listen carefully the first time, and to do their “Personal Best” on the test.

Upcoming 2nd Grade Program - February 9, 2023

Reminder - Pack a change of clothes!

Mystery Reader Program Sign Up

A Mystery Reader program is a guest reader, BUT their identity is kept secret to build anticipation and excitement. Teachers may even choose to give clues before they arrive to get the students extra excited!

FISD Board Policy requires that each volunteer and/or mentor undergo a background check before working with students. You will be prompted to complete the background check during your VOLY account creation process. Keep an eye on your inbox for your background check approval (the process can take up to 3-5 business days). Once approved, you will be able to sign up directly for volunteer opportunities through the VOLY platform. To volunteer at Rogers Elementary, you will need to create a VOLY account by visiting https://friscoisd.voly.org.

Lunch Visitors - SIGN UP REQUIRED

Lunch visitors have begun on campus and we have enjoyed seeing families have a meal with their students!

Please remember that sign ups are required in order to eat lunch on campus with your student. If the sign up for the grade level is full and a parent comes to eat lunch, unfortunately we will not be able to accommodate you that day. The sign up is linked below for quick access!

LUNCH VISITOR SIGN UP

As a reminder, we ask that parents visit 1-2 times per month to allow all interested visitors the opportunity to eat lunch with their student. You must bring an ID in order to be granted access to the building.

Finally, we ask that you do not park in the fire lane.

5th Grade Parent Information

Hello parents! The Staley counselors came and met with the 5th graders this week to talk about next year’s classes. I have also been meeting with each student one-on-one this week to talk about classes, strengths, and goals.

The students will be bringing home a registration form that needs to be filled out with you (the parent(s)/guardian(s). On this form, you will designate which classes you want your child to take next year. Please send this form back to school by Monday, January 23rd, so the middle school counselors and I can help your child register online through HAC. This online registration needs to be completed by January 31st.

In case you missed the email earlier in the week, please review this presentation video. Your child has already received this information, but it may be beneficial to have your child review it again with you. Rising 6th Grade Registration Presentation Video

JANUARY’S CHARACTER TRAIT CURIOSITY

Link for CURIOSITY Challenge Board

Why does curiosity matter?

When you’re curious about something, you process it deeply, rather than superficially. You also voluntarily spend more time learning about things that spark your curiosity. As a result, you more readily remember what you learn. In general, people who are more curious are happier and better liked.

Pulse Check: Reflect on how you’ve engaged with the world this past week. How many of these things are true?

-I got so absorbed in learning that I lost track of time.

-I talked to someone who gave me a new idea or changed my mind.

-I took the initiative to learn more about one of my interests.
-When I didn’t know the answer to a question, I couldn’t rest until I figured it out.

-I explored a completely new idea or topic—just for the fun of it.

How do I encourage curiosity in others?

-Model It. Cheerfully admit that you don’t know what you don’t know: “I actually don’t know how to do that problem. Let’s look it up together!” However you enjoy exploring your personal interests—books, podcasts, documentaries—share what you like: “I listened to the most amazing story today. Let me tell you about it!”

-Celebrate It. Praise question-asking: “What a great question! I love the ideas it’s

sparking!” Show admiration for wrong answers: “No, that’s not right. Explain to me how

you’re thinking about this!” Build on curiosity expressed as statements: “I bet that if we use all our pencils we can build a skyscraper!” “That’s cool, let’s see how we can do that!”

-Enable It. Make room for curiosity: When planning an activity, factor in time for questions. Establish an end-of-day ritual to share one thing each person in the family learned that they didn’t know before. Replace close-ended questions (“Is oxygen a component of the air we breathe?”) with open-ended questions (“What is air made of?”).
