3rd 9 Weeks Report Card: Have you checked Skyward for your student’s report card that posted Mar 24? We are in the final stretch of the school year. Finish strong! It’s not too late for students to earn spring credits or pass average for the year. Need help figuring out what grade you need this last 9 weeks to pass average for the year? Here’s how:

  1. Subtract Sem 1 average from 140. That’s what you need Sem 2 average to be!

  2. Multiply what you need Sem 2 average to be X 2, then subtract your 3rd 9 weeks grade.

  3. That’s the average you need the last 9 weeks!

Need help? See your counselor or talk with your teacher. We are here to help you make the grade!

PARENT EDUCATION & EMPOWERMENT

Each month we will highlight a different topic for parents of teens to hopefully grow in their knowledge and awareness.

Stress & Test Anxiety: A recent survey of almost 2,000 CISD high school students indicated that stress at school is a significant worry to them. Standardized testing can be a big contributor to that stress, especially in the spring. But there is lots of new research indicating how a mindshift in the way we think about stress can make a big difference in how well we cope with it. As we open to the possibility that stress, even in the form of testing, can be an opportunity for us to rise to a challenge, there can be marked improvement in both our health and our performance. These resources below can prime the pump for some great conversations with your teen. Parents can plant the seeds for a positive response to stress which can quite literally create the biology of courage.

Check out these additional resources that can spark conversation and ideas to support your teen in this endeavor:

  • TED Talk: How to make stress your friend (14 min)

  • Test Anxiety (article): What is it? What causes it? What can you do about it?

  • Rethinking Stress by Stanford University (approx 1 hr of videos): Eleven brief videos show you how to rethink stress leading to better health and performance.

Tips for Overcoming Test Anxiety:

  • Approach the exam with confidence- use visualization, positive self-talk, or journal

  • Get a good night sleep and eat a good breakfast

  • Relax and take deep breaths during the test

  • Focus on the next step and stay on track rather than ruminating in fear

  • Anticipate some anxiety- but remember that can work to your benefit by increasing the oxygen to your brain and attentiveness

  • Use positive reinforcement and self talk- you are doing your best!
